Random Wednesday

I think that my lack of wanting to run this week has been directly proportional to the wind we have had here. Seems that even though it was cold on Tuesday (36F), that because there was no wind, I had an easy 3 miler. However, both Monday and Today (Wednesday) have been moderately windy and thus when I have thought about running, I’ve opted for my desk. Today, I should have gone to the indoor pool, but I have to chalk that one up to sheer laziness.

I’ve been pondering about what running events that I want to participate in during 2008. I think that I may focus on my shorter races and triathlons with just one marathon. I think I can create a schedule that will will catapult me through the year building on the different events. I’m sure once that I map it out on a calendar it will make more sense that in my brain.

More reasons why I just need to relax during December besides the normal downtime/ cyclic depression is that I will be have a minor medical procedure next Thursday that will keep me down and out for 2 days. It’ll be a nice day to play hooky from work but I won’t be able to much of anything.

Also, I want to (and need to) give blood this month before the new year so that I can maintain my Super Donor status. Given the fact that for about 7 days after giving blood, my speed running sucks and I’m having this medical excursion, that I will give blood on the 27th or 28th. This way, I can be fully recovered for Calhoun’s 10 miler at the end of January

I have not done any of my Christmas Baking yet. So, I need to get on the ball with that. Oh, I found out the there is Hazelnut Milk… I didn’t know they had udders either. My Truffle recipe calls for heavy cream, so I am not sure that I can get the same effect with just a “regular” milk consistency.

I took a few shots when I was in Maryville for the Reindeer Run. Here is the slideshow and link to the picture album.

Camera Help

StellaI’ve had Stella for about a year now and would really like to give her an upgrade, not only to increase her output but also her functionality. I have been using her straight out of the box with the equipment that she has had, but now I want to make her bigger and better. Kind like give her a technological face lift or boob job but with all the cutting and saline implants.

Jewelry

LensRight now, Stella comes with the Kit Lens (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens) which a general use lens, nothing too great, nothing too bad. But I am limited in my ability to take upclose/macro pictures as well as distant pictures. Typically, the most you pay for a lens the better the lens. It might be lens quality (material, etc) or performance (such as a macro lens or a huge mofo lens like you see at sporting games). Some lens require very less light to take a great picture, or some have great Zooooooom.

I have heard good things about the Sigma 18-200mm lens as a pretty functional lens that I could use without having to switch lens often.

SpeedlightThere are lots of different flashes out there… some that are handheld that fire remotely. Or others that are in shiny umbrellas like at portrait places, but I was thinking about a mounting flash. I read that Speedlite is the most recognized brand, but I don’t know if that is the best that’s out there and what type of features I would need/want

Fashion Accessories

FilterFilters: Not sure which filters would be th best for me to get, because I want to protect the lens plus enhance the light. I know that different filters do different things, but for an all around filter do I want a UV Haze filter or a polarized filter or what?Hood

Lens Hood: I know that I need one. They are used to block light coming in from the side of the lens, this means that the light from the object being photographed has more input into the picture. My Canon AV-1 (35mm) has a collapsable rubber hood, but thought I would check to see.

So what recommendations do you out there on the internet have for me to save up my “nickies and pennles”?

I thought that it was really cool that I started the race with a slightly overweight Einstein. I thought he was dead, but that’s just a theory I guess.

Lunchtime Photos

I took a camera on my stroll to workout today at lunch, here are a few pictures:

Fell apart and rebuilt

I held aloft my scheduling sword and said “I HAVE THE POWER!!!” Eric was at Grandma's for his first overnight with Mommy and Daddy not in (at least) the same building. Hmmm, no phone calls yet, so that is a good sign that all went well. So that left after 5 with me having a free evening until about 8 O'clock or so. I had to run a few errands such as: getting a new espresso carafe (gravity sucks), getting my haircut and getting diapers. Once at Grandma's was secured, I called Party Marty (aka Beer Boy) to arrange some running in the evening. We decided that we would run Cherokee Blvd which has a 5 mile crushed gravel path in Knoxville, a good place to run among $400,000 and $500,000 30 year old homes. So, knowing that I would be working out in the evening, I opted to run a few of the errands at my lunchtime to get them out of the way. Conveniently, Great Clips ($5.99 coupon) and Bed, Bath and Beyond (20% off coupon) are very close to each other. So I ran my errands and finished the rest of the day.

I got a call from Beer Boy at 5 saying that he was late leaving work because of some brewing issues and wanted to know if we wanted to change locations to someplace else as it wouldn't be until 6:00 to make it to Cherokee. We decided to meet at the Alcoa/Maryville Greenway, a nice 6 mile greenway that runs through the two towns. This is when things really started to fall apart. As I was traveling Alcoa Highway, traffic backed up and right at that time the SportsTalk show went to a traffic report. An accident on the southbound side of Aloca Highway (Oh, great) between a Tractor Trailer and a Horse Trailer (uh, oh) had happened at Topside Road (crap, I am 2 miles away from there) and Alcoa was backed up for a good distance. I called Beer Boy back and we decided that we'd meet at Volunteer Landing, because he wouldn't be affected much by the accident if he travelled North on Alcoa but if he went South, he would be stuck like I was.

So I turned around and made my way to Volunteer Landing, would take me 7 minutes… if I had taken the right route. I should have taken the Neyland Dr exit, but like a dummy, took the interstate, got stuck in traffic, got off on the Henley Street Exit only to get caught up in downtown traffic. Then was a victim of the one-way streets and had to pass right in front of Volunteer Landing, go to the campus and turn around. It was about 5:25 when I parked at Volunteer Landing. Ugh.

I figured that Beer Boy would be around in 20 minutes, so I decided to run a mile to get it under my belt. I was were I run during my Lunchtime runs, so I was familiar with the area. I ran a mile, not keeping time, and came back to wait. I decided to take advantage of the time to take pictures of Volunteer Landing, which was a nice break. When it was close to 6 and no Beer Boy, I decided to run another mile, just in case everything fell through, which at this point wasn't totally unbelievable. So I ran another mile, out and back and still no Beer Boy. I decided to run an additional mile to bring the count to 3, that way, if I had to abandon, it would not be all for naught. I run my 3rd mile and get back, at about 6:30, I get a call saying that he is about to Volunteer Landing (sigh) and would be there in about 10-15 minutes. So, I struck out for another mile and finished before he arrived.

Beer Boy finally showed up around 6:45 and we headed out for an out and back course that I mapped this morning to be 2.75 miles. I was late getting home because I still needed diapers, but all in all it was a good run. 6.75 miles, I am not complaining! Here are a few pictures that I took while waiting for Beer Boy, some will be queue for | P | L | A | N | E | T | 3 | R | R | Y |.

PLANET3RRY photography

Today is the official release of my photoblog – | P | L | A | N | E | T | 3 | R | R | Y | photography The link has been on my LiveJournal Link list, but was taken off and now is back. It still is up at my Jenandterry.com website and now have added it my blogger account (which is nothing more than a placeholder account).

So how do you get there?

  • You can click the link to the left of this post for “PLANET3RRY photography”
  • You can get there directly at photo.jenandterry.com (one day I hope to have the planet3rry.com domain name
  • You can go to my jenandterry.com website and click the link to “PLANET3RRY” in the header
  • Why did I do this?
Well, I have been an avid photographer, oh I forgot “amateur”, for many years now. In high school my friend Patrick Wilson and I borrowed Pete's Canon FTb camera for a photoshoot much like Sting did at that time. It was a lot of fun and continued to take pictures here and there but just with an old point-and-click camera. Christmas of 1992, I even asked for a new camera so that I would have one to keep with me, because I would “see” scenes and would want to take a picture and had destroyed my last camera.

I remained mildly active in picture taking but again with an Advantix and 35mm film point-and-click. Although I was trying to capture a picture like I had a 35mm SLR, it was not happening. Once digital media came into consumer price ranges, it was easier to take pictures but without a good camera, it was the same-old-same-old. In late 2002, I asked to borrow Pete's FTb again, in anticipation of my first son's birth. I knew that I could take some good pictures, but wanted a little practice using the camera before I started taking pictures. At Christmas of 2002, Jen and I bought a Canon Powershot S45 camera a 4 megapixel digital camera. I am still learning how to use all the feature of this camera, but have gotten some decent shots with it. In 2004, just before I went to American Samoa for work, I bought a compact 2 megapixel as a personal camera. It's small enough to fit in my pocket and take shots whenever I see something. In spring of 2005, I found a yard sale gem, a Canon AV-1 in great shape with the standard lens and a 50-200mm lens, plus a flash (that was broken) all for a great price (cheaper than eBay). The Canon AV-1 is not as powerful as the FTb, they are essentially the same body frame, but the photographer has more control over the FTb than the AV-1. I am looking now to add a digital SLR camera to my arsenal of cameras, but they can be very expensive, even the older models…

    How did I do this?
The photoblog is run using Pixelpost software. I load the picture via a web interface and it displays the pictures when I want. Pixelpost is customizable with many different options and it's free. It does use one of the databases given to me from my website provider, so you do need someone to host it for you. There are free photoblogging software out there. I would suggest going to Photoblogs.org for more information. Since I have the free LiveJournal Account for my running blog, I chose to customize the Live Journal website and then change the photoblog and my jenandterry.com website to match.

    What will I do now?
I plan on posting a new picture everyday (at noon) until I run out of material. If you click on the ARCHIVE link at PLANET3RRY, you will see that I have already uploaded 100+ pictures. Although this is a disadvantage for me, as material to post, it does two things:

    • Makes me go out and get more material
    • It gives a good base for a visitor to know what I have done and what to expect

I find that new photoblogs at photoblogs.com with only a few pictures, I only glance and then leave, but those with a decent archive, I look to see what they have done and whether I want to bookmark them.

So I will post the pictures that I like when I can. There is a Common Creative License on the website. Basically, if you want to use my pictures… ask first because I will do the same. More than likely I will grant your request. Also, if you would like to purchase a print, please let me know and we can discuss pricing and sizing, etc.

    Who do I like?
Here are a list of photo websites that I have bookmarked in Sage as of September 2005. Sage is a lightweight RSS and Atom feed aggregator extension for Mozilla Firefox. My site does have an RSS feed to so, so feel free to bookmark me!

    Unveiling

On September 28th, I will be unveiling my photo blog and will also be registering it with Photoblogs.org. In addition, I might even send in submissions for the Photo Friday Contest as well.

In my photo blog, which will be named the same this one, | P | L | A | N | E | T | 3 | R | R | Y |, will feature a new picture (hopefully) every day featuring my photography. The pictures will be classified into different categories, so that someone will be able to see certain types of pictures, if they chose. Examples of categories are ‘creatures’, ‘buildings’, ‘nature’ and more. Each picture will also have a comment feature that will allow the viewer to leave a comment, if they desire.

The website is still in test mode and I have approximately 100+ pictures already uploaded. I did not want to start the website with few pictures, I wanted to have a good collection of work online, as I have found that when I peruse photography sites that have archives and have few pictures, I stay the least amount of time.

    see you then.

    Lightbeams from Heaven

As I was making my way home last night on I-40, I caught a glimse of sunlight breaking through a hole in the clouds, just like you would see in a movie. I took the photograph, with my damaged Minolta Dimage X20, while driving none the less and through the windshield. I managed to get 3 shots of it and this one was the best of them all. The view, of course, was much more awe inspiring in person.

    It’s Thursday already?

This blog update was supposed to be up for yesterday, but I got behind with a bunch of things and so, here it is today instead. This week has flown by, seems like it was just monday but, nope here it is on Thursday. Most of my time was consumed reconstructing my “about me” page (which is on the black strip above), so if you get an inkling to check it out after you are done, please feel free. I think I did an okay job on it being my first attempt at collage and mapping an image. If I really understood Photoshop, that would help.

Speaking of photo related stuff, I think that I am going to pursue photography as a hard-core hobby. I have really enjoyed having a small camera with me, plus having the ability to use Pete’s SLR camera. I will now have to learn about the flash and the proper way to use it. I have been inundating myself in photography websites, seeing techniques, content and lighting. I figured that I would stay pretty safe with nature photos, but would like to expand into head shot and stuff like that.

Jen has signed up one new member with another very interested, so that is very exciting. I have posted new picture albums of Eric, in case you went here directly.

I am getting ready for American Samoa, in fact I will begin to start lying out clothes and other things that I will take with me. Here is a picture of car that I saw on wednesday walking to the aquatic center. It made me miss the Mr. Arfns Mobile although, I never needed this much duct tape!

    Duct Car

The last part of this post is about Callaway Landing which is located just down the road from me that is being threatened by the addition of the local waste water treatment plant.

    Callaway

[from their website] Present day Callaway’s Landing is a 50-acre remnant of a 154 year old, 600-acre river bottom family farm in Farragut/Concord, Knox County, Tennessee. It straddles the southern end of Concord Road with most of the farm within the corporate limits of the Town of Farragut, while the remainder resides in Knox County, in an area traditionally called Concord. The main farm house (known as the Big House) constructed in 1911, the marble barn of similar vintage, a post Civil War sharecroppers shack, a World War II vintage apartment built for and used in support of the defense department efforts in Oak Ridge, and a 1940′s style gas station and store stand as mute testimony to the sometimes flowery history of the farm known as Callaway’s Landing.
