Status Report

“Private, what’s the status on the Runner?”

“Not Good General. Prognosis is still unclear.”

“Come on Private you can do better than that.”

“General Sir, the Runner has been exposed to some hostile creatures. We engaged the auto-defenses 3 weeks ago. Seems that their armor is stronger than our weapons.”

“My God Private, didn’t you use the Big Guns.”

“Yes sir, we unleash the SUNISDNADLOC in a multiple scatter pattern over a couple of days. That only took out the some of the weaker creatures. Over the weekend we launch two heavy payload CETRYZs. We got rid of most of the infantry, but some of the ranking officers are still there.”

“Private.”

“Yes Sir!”

“I am authorizing a sniper strike on the enemy’s ranking officer. I want tear gas, I want mustard gas, I want this place moving, I want to get flush them out, I want to smoke them out of their caves, I want them OUT of the runner. We have to mobilize the runner as soon as possible. Private, this Operation Looks Like Split Pea Soup. Get Moving!”

“SIR YES SIR!”

Sounds weird, but I might get to run… today.

Perpetual Plague

I am going to split open my face and scrap out my sinus cavity… there is something up there that won’t go away! Chalk up another “Zero” in the Run Column for today.

My running has been SOOO lean. How lean is it? It’s so lean that you couldn’t even have a piece a bacon for Eggs, Spam, Bacon, and Spam breakfast. It’s that lean. Actually, I know that I ran on the 7th and 8th of this month, but I have not logged the miles into my Buckeye Outdoors account. I just hope that I blogged about it so that I remember what the hell I ran.

This means, in essence, that the Whitestone 30k is now mothballed and for all practical purposes, the Marathon Relay that I wanted to do with some people in my Sunday School Class will be lined out. At least with the Marathon, I can still volunteer… I was asked by name to man one of the last intersections of the course. And when you ask The Planet3rry to volunteer for something… He loves to dismiss the Darkness and Chaos.

What this does mean is that the monies budgeted to these races can go for some more smaller races and thus I can work on some of my speedwork. So, a little detour… granted that I get rid of this residual cold. I should go run so that the cold air forces out all the mucus and dries it up.

My Lovely and Talented Wife had found a WordPress plugin that let you had a glossary of terms… basically a marketing tool. I just got an email from the Photo Hunter Hostess, TN Chick with her visual plugin glossary. SO maybe I can put that up soon.

Hats off to my Mom who has been a recent contributor to the Dumpster Diving phenomenon that has been sweeping the MyCokeRewards points land. She already knows that her son is weird and loves him anyway. Coke is starting to roll in some better prizes. I want to see the goods before I pull the trigger on the lower priced items.

X of all

Zoinks! Things around here have been busy. It seems that if I am not going 100 mph then I’m going to slow. So where should I start?

Once a upon a time, not too long ago…

First of all, I got a new phone. I went ahead and got the Katana II for me to upgrade to it was only $30 and to upgrade to the Katana DLX was $130. So for a savings of $100, I’d go for the lower tech. It’s pretty sleek, but I have yet to activate it yet. I think am admiring it in all of it’s glory that I don’t want to do anything. Well, I should figure out how to get it activated. What’s great is that now I will be able to Mobile Blog and show you pictures of what’s happening with me… or see my observations that a picture add to the entertainment value… so that I don’t have to go BACK to the place to get the shot… such as the picture in Meth Heads Prefer Grape post.

Second of all, I think I am going to add a “Goals” section on the Sidebar so that you can track how successful I am with my trading. Instead of the goal “Make Large Bags of Cash”, I am going to put it “$1,000 for Seminar Trip in July”. By using that whole Law of Attraction thing. So, look for that in days to come… if I knew Ajax… I’d write me a fancy plug-in for WordPress. I’m really digging the whole 2 sidebar theme.

Third of all, I am thinking of another contest. But I think this one will be more aimed toward runners as I am thinking of having the prize 26.2 Marathon Stories. Non-runners would probably like some of the (i’m assuming because I haven’t read it) stories in there or maybe they’d like it as a coffee table book. Maybe they even have a lunatic runner friend and have no idea of what to give them as a gift.

Fourth of all, We tried a new Gluten Free Bread last night… Pamela’s Products Wheat-Free Amazing Bread Mix. If I hadn’t have underbaked it, I think it would have turned out awesome. I was recently upset when Amazon shifted their Gluten Free Pantry Favorite bread to another shipper. This meant that I now had to PAY for shipping (YA, I know!) and the cost of it wasn’t any cheaper than what I could buy at the local store. So I thought that I would check out Pamela and her fine assortment of goodies. We have had the Pancake mix from Pamela’s before and that was pretty good. AND the bonus is that you can do a subscription of this from Amazon, so the cost breaks down to $3.26 per 2 lb loaf… that’s almost the same price as regular bread!

Fifth of all, My nose has stopped running and is just slightly congested. Unfortunately, I have NOT started running again. Bleh! I think tomorrow will be the only chance I get to run for the next couple of days. I might be able to run over the weekend at the In-laws house, but I will have the kids.

Sixth of all, I have been selling my stuff on eBay pretty heavy. I had 3 auction end this morning that I will need to get shipped out. I am looking for a good wholesale/niche that I can use to sell stuff and make a profit. I think the anxiety drugs are working because I am much much more comfortable with being entrepreneurial than I ever have been.

So that’s what’s been going on and I just realized that I am late for a meeting…

My Nose is Running Faster

My Nose was running faster than I was this morning. That combined with some lotion in my eye and I was pretty miserable this morning. Our household right now is a germ haven. The Younger was confirmed to have a mild ear infection from the visit to the Doc’s today. We kept The Elder from school yesterday because of flowing green boogies coming out of his nose. Oi!

Anyway, I didn’t run yesterday nor today because of errands. I’m hoping to get something in tomorrow and hopefully, I will feel better by then to get some miles in. The bad thing is that the weather albeit a little windy is very comfortable, so a run would feel awesome. We are going to be getting some wet weather tonight, so who know what tomorrow will bring.

Not the Runner

Strange Things have been afoot at the Circle K Planet3rry Household. I think that everybody now has had their mandatory stomach virus issue now. Seems that our Au Pair and My Lovely and Talented Wife both had the virus yesterday. They were pretty much useless out of commission for the entire day. I came home early to help with the kids. I took The Younger to me to Kroger so that I could make some Ginger Tea for My Lovely and Talented Wife so that she could get rid of the nausea that kept her prone in bed. And the way I make Ginger Tea is with Ginger Root, so we were fresh out of Ginger Root from the last pregnancy, so I had to go to the grocery store. I took The Younger by stealth, as The Elder was absorbed in a video game and would want to come if he knew we were going. Going to get ANYTHING with one kid adds 10 minutes… with 2 kids adds about an hour. It’s insane!

So me and my helper went to the store. Typically, he wants to be carried all the time. I mean, when you have your own portable carrying system (i.e. mommy daddy grandma, mommy daddy grandma) you use it. But I unbuckled his carseat, I said, “Ok, let’s go.”

I made him crawl out of the seat and the car. Before we walked to the entrance I said, “hand please.” He cordially took my hand and we went inside. I found the ginger root that I wanted, gave him the bag and said, “let’s go this way,” leading him to the Natural Foods section (as if there even should be the need to label ANY part of the grocery store ‘natural’ or ‘health’, we should ALL be eating healthy natural food). He was perfectly content on just holding my hand, keeping up with me, avoiding traffic, etc.

“Okay, let’s check out,” I told him as I scored with some Fruit leather on sale. Fruit leather, being in the natural food section, is “real” fruit dehydrated and smashed into a flatten slab o’fruit. The difference between this and something like Fruit Roll-Ups is about 2lbs less sugar in the Fruit Leather. Anyway, you have to pay the “healthy tax” on them, so normally, they are $0.59-0.69 each, but now there is a brand on sale for $0.33. SCORE!

We made our way to the check out, a U-scan at that, and proceed to check out. While we are checking out, The Younger kept putting his hand on the check out bag scale. So the polite womanly voice kept saying “Please put the item back in the bag.” Once we were checked out, I gave the bag to him and said, “Here, carry this.” We then walked to the car and headed home. Done and Done.

At some point in the early evening before putting the kids down, I was hit with “The Black Sleep“. I could not stay awake and I thought that if I just laid my head down, all would be okay. In a 10 minute span, I started to dream some very strange dream that involved The Loud and Lovable Skipper Doodle and some people from our Sunday School class. Very strange… but I didn’t get to finish it.

So I’m leading into the post title, just bear with me. So, I am hit with The Black Sleep and managed to sleep a little when I put the kids down. I wake up and closed down the house minimally so that I could get back to laying down again. Where I would lay down mattered little as to laying down period. Had there been a pillow in the kitchen, I would have napped there.

Despite wanting to sleep the sleep of the undead, I had to stay on point and wait for 1:00am to arrive so that we could get My Lovely and Talented Wife registered for Career Conference. Once that happened, I was out. I woke up late this morning, which was kind of okay because with it being Super Tuesday, the school system was closed. However, The Younger was using me as a trampoline so that I would wake up and make French Toast Sticks. Once the sticks were completed, I DID nap on the kitchen floor.

I managed to make it into work, but all I have wanted to do is sleep. I have been very tired. So tired that I missed running at lunch despite the fantastic 70F weather outside. I rested my head down when lunch finally arrived. I never slept but the resting helped. I haven’t ran since Calhoun’s 10 miler on the 26th of January… almost 10 days ago. what’s up with that! Stomach Bugs… that’s what! I was thinking that with my stomach bug over and done with that I would be back on schedule… Noooooo. But I figured out what is the main culprit of this session of The Black Sleep… Gluten. I had some birthday cake yesterday and although I didn’t get a big piece, I made up for it with some cookies.

If I can some how make it through this afternoon… I should be okay. That’ll teach me. Tomorrow’s weather is also supposed to be warm, so I should get to enjoy this weather before it gets back to the regular scheduled programming… winter.

A Drop Off

Some of you may be wondering “where is the great content that Terry puts out” or “Didn’t he run a race this weekend, that slack ass hasn’t posted his race report”. Others of you may be saying “thank goodness”.

The reason for my absence from the great Blogosphere on the Intertube has been a viral one of sorts. It’s all started back on Sunday.

I was putting the kids down to bed, when The Younger, who had been just as peachy as all get out for the day, stops and gets this glazed look over his eyes. My spidey senses began to tingle and before I could do anything (I was already sitting down in Book Reading Mode), The Younger begins to expel every drop of liquid from his body. Thankfully he wasn’t aimed at me, or it would have been a scene from The Exorcist (except without all the head spinning).

So, a stomach virus had arrived. We quickly did the 48hr incubation math and determined that he may have picked something up from The Mall… how lovely. Thankfully he didn’t share his gift with those at Church since he hung out with us and listened to the Contemporary Music.

So Monday morning I needed to take My Lovely and Talented Wife to the airport for her trip. Since her flight was at Too Freakin’ Early, we set the alarm at 3:45am to give us 1, maybe 2 snoozes before we had to get up. My Lovely and Talented Wife was super smart and had 98% of her bags packed early on Sunday, thus we could get the bags and go.

It’s common for the kids to come into our room when they wake up at 5:30 or 6. They are pretty considerate to leave us alone, except for the times when The Younger decides to play Steamroller on us but we don’t play his game and try to ignore him for an hour or so. So, the alarm goes off at 3:45am and The Younger is in our bed. I hit snooze, thinking that I would get at least 9 more minutes of sleep. And I did sort of because at 3:53am, we are instantly awakened (as if we had 3 espressos) when we here The Younger start to heave. WE ARE AWAKE.

He ends up getting sick and so we decide to toss him in the car and take him to the airport. This way our Au Pair doesn’t have to get up way early since The Elder was still asleep. During the trip, The Younger got sick again. Another reason why My Lovely and Talented Wife is SO SMART, is that she suggested to put a towel near him during the trip. And it worked!

So when we get home, The Younger and I watch The Little Einsteins movie. Actually, HE watched it, I tried to sleep more. The morning proceeded normally. I come home from work to get the status report on The Younger… he had thrown up once more but was feeling fine. I on the other hand felt the urge to sleep, so I took advantage of the 1/2 hour that I had to sleep. I put the kids to bed, fell asleep with them and the next thing I knew it was 10pm.

I felt bad but not super yucky. I did have this great urge to sleep more, so I went straight to bed. I was awoken sometime in the early morning from The Younger finding a pack of gum and chewing (and probably swallowing) it all. I listened for any type of choking, but the kid chews it like a cow, it was easy to monitor.

I woke up and felt like a train had hit me. I wasn’t sick (yet) but I felt sloooow. I realized that I probably had a touch of what The Younger had, but for some reason, all the action seemed to be heading South. I had a couple of sitting spells before I took The Elder to school. I felt okay, but knew that I would be dehydrated from the poopiness. I stopped for a Powerade and diet Coke and went off to work.

By 9am, I was starting to decline. I only took very small sips from drinks and didn’t say much. I then started to feel very hot and sweaty. I was going to go sit on the toilet (the boys bathroom is in the other house) but as I opened the door, I felt a rush of liquid and made a dash for the edge of the porch. Although I was heaving out what was in my stomach, I observed that a combination of Green Squall Powerade and Diet Coke didn’t make the vomit taste all that bad coming back up.

So, I promptly left work, went home and slept from 10am to 5pm when it was my duty to take care of the kids. I felt like Hell, but the Au Pair needs her time off. So, I go out to the kitchen and I learn that once The Elder came home, his turn with the stomach virus has started. So, I went to go take care of him while the Au Pair entertained The Younger for an hour.

The Elder and I watched School House Rocks! DVD in its entirety. The Younger joined in after Tub Time. I then put the kids down to bed, but The Elder got sick twice (nothing much… wasn’t anything in his stomach). The Younger finally went to sleep, but I still felt like crap. I managed to get some liquids in me as well as some solid food. Based on what I can tell this bug is a 12hr or so variety…

Well, I’ll go back to work tomorrow, but now that my sleep schedule is a mess, I’m sure it’ll be interesting. Since I haven’t felt like doing anything, NOTHING has gotten done. Which is a shame because times like these are when I get a lot of stuff done. So, I do have a race report partially written, that is forthcoming, but for now it’s time to get some sleep.

Loopy Loop and nuclear missiles?

As I type this, I am on the other side of my valium (generic though) for my outpatient procedure. I can tell you that it really made me kind spacey. You know those warnings on the side of medication bottles, the ones that say: “Don’t operate heavy machinery”, “don’t drink alcohol while taking this medication”, “Don’t drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication”… all the important ones. Well, we were about 2 miles from the house when My Lovely and Talented Wife says to me “Should you even be driving? Pull over.”

“Hmmm, probably so.” So I pull into the Arby’s parking lot and get out. Groovy man… I felt great. I was so relaxed, I just hung out in the car while she drove. Walking to the office was fun. It was like I was drunk but without the stupor.

I got called within 10 minutes, so I went back there and started to get prepped. The nurse asked if My Wife wanted to come back. I told her that if she wanted to come back and hang out or watch. So, she went out and she came back. She said that I was smiling the entire time, so the drugs were good.

Everything went smoothly and I was out of there in no time. I have a couple of days in bed resting and then basically a week before I can run again.

While we were traveling home, we saw these exhaust trails shooting straight in the air and whatever was doing them were fast! I speculated that they were nuclear missles. But Oak Ridge doesn’t have any missle silos that I am aware of and they could be something else. If I hear something about them I will update you.

The drugs are slowly wearing off and I am now going on pain medication, more as a preventative as I am not in any pain right now. I just have to keep the kids from using me as a jungle gym as they usually do.

I’m going to rest now…

Shin Shin Sher-ee

A runner is as lucky, as lucky can be
Shin shin-in-ey, shin shin-in-ey
shin shin sher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes ‘ands with you

I ran today, for the first time post- PR Setting Chickamauga Marathon. I waited until today more out of scheduling than anything else. I wish that I had ran on Wednesday because a storm font came through and it was 73F yesterday and 44F Today!

Regardless the thing that I was worried about most is my shins. In a previous blog entry, I said that I have stressed my shins during a regular lunchtime run. As I was thinking about it, it made obvious sense on why I hurt my shins that day. Just like from the movie Seven, Vanity caused me great pain. Okay, so it’s nothing like the movie, but it was my vanity that resulted in my shin problems. Then, with the marathon, the shin pain came back. It didn’t hurt enough that I was in pain, but it wasn’t comfortable either.

So post marathon, the shins were okay. I never really noticed them, but when I did there was no pain. I didn’t think that I had seriously injured them, but then again maybe I did.

So today, I ran my Fave Run the Market Square Fab 4 miler, and I never felt my shins at all. Now, I did feel my ankle a couple of times and my legs weren’t too bad either. I wasn’t looking at the watch, but I did capture my split times and I was a little surprised at my times: 8:33, 8:27, 8:45 and 8:34.

Now, I am back at my desk and my shins don’t hurt, but they do feel tight. Am I to think that it’s just muscular and that it’s still in the healing process, or do I think something worse (like stress fractures). I’m not too well versed in shin problems. When I had shin splints back in 1998, it hurt to run (it doesn’t now) and I changed my shoes and it went away. So, not sure why it’s still hanging around other than it’s residual from the marathon.

Thoughts?

The Foot

I wrote yesterday about how my foot was offer as a prayer request on Sunday. When I woke up Monday morning, my foot was feeling normal. Closer to normal since the injury. I couldn’t even find any remote sense of pain.

Today was the same thing when I woke up… nuthin’ No soreness, no pain. I could find the feeling in the foot when I put all my weight on the side of my foot. Okay, so it’s still there. I wanted to run today so that I could get the running to clear out my sinuses. I switched gears on my sickness as more allergy than illness. I took a Zyrtec-D last night and it went well. I woke up with just a little congestion in my nose, but it went away.

So as I walked to the aquatic center today, I could not feel anything in my foot. I even tried to step up on the curb in such away that the injury spot was right on the edge of the curb… nothing. So, I was ready to run today and see what would happen to my foot after the run.

Here’s what I did timewise

Split Split Distance Overall Distance Split Time Split Pace Overall Time Comments
1 1.73 1.73 14:05 8:09 14:05 &nbsp
2 0.87 2.60 7:19 8:27 21:24 &nbsp
3 1.8 4.4 15:21 8:32 36:46 &nbsp

and for my foot… it did not cause me one problem while running. The soreness is back though in the slightest degree. So, I am happy about that since I have the doctor’s appointment. I guess I should make some sort of a log on my foot so I know what to tell the doc. The mid 8 minute pace was a little tough on the hills, but fairly easy to maintain on the flat areas. So, maybe I need to sit down and think about my marathon pace in 12 freakin’ days!

what’s up doc?

So, I had my appointment with my general practitioner for the ailments of my foot as described in the tag linked “metatarsal” subject. Well, he didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know… but he did make some comments on my toes and their condition.

My two littlest toes on my foot curl under each other and have been this way as far back as I can remember. I do know why they are this way but they are and will stay that way, I guess. He made a comment about them. Also, he comments on the state of the ends of my toes. You can tell from the pictures after my race in November at Chickamauga and the blister after my 22 mile run last month, that my little piggies have seen better days. I explained to him that some of this is soccer related,as we were told that we had to push our toes when we locked our ankles to shot the ball. This provides maximum strength when shooting the ball. Also, I think that I just wiggle my toes when I run. I have many socks with toe holes… which leads into my rant on toenail maintenance before marathons.

So his diagnosis is “take it easy” and ” see a podiatrist”. I take that as run smart, but don’t stop running AND go see a podiatrist. So, I will continue on track on my marathon training schedule and will schedule in a podiatrist appointment. Perhaps I wil need orthotics in my shoes for my stride. I would like to keep shoes longer than 200 miles!

But, it was a 2 for 1 special at the doctor’s office. I was also treated for the cold that I have (thanks little germ factories of mine). I got a narcotic cough syrup (and I am not even coughing… hee hee), and some nasal steroid. Man, I hope they don’t have testing after the race ;-) . I also went and got some Mucinex which is a high dose expectorant and help keeps the phlegm moving. I do NOT want it to settle in my lungs… So, now it’s on to my regiment of drugs.
