Prize Announcement

The Prize for the Guess My Times, Win Crap Harpeth Hills Edition has been announced

PRIZ3S a division of Planet3rry.com

announced today, right here, that the person with the closest finishing time guess for the Harpeth Hills Marathon will win this fabulous prize:

D'OH

MMMMMMmmmmm CHIA....

unused HOMER J. SIMPSON Chia Pet

******
Watch it Grow!
Handmade Decorative Planter

Easy to do. . . fun to grow! Full coat 1-2 weeks.

Contains:

  • Handmade pottery planter
  • Chia seed packet for 3 plantings
  • Convenient plastic drip tray
  • Planting and care instructions sheet

Reuse your Chia Indefinitely. Simply replant with chia (extra seeds included) or similar herb seeds, such as basil, alfalfa, marjoram or thyme.
*****

And even if you have the Green Thumb of DEATH, you can’t mess up the Chia.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL

In addition to Homer, PRIZ3S is also pleased to announce that Homer’s Beverage of Choice will also be included. Due to fact that shipping alcohol beverage over state lines is “technically” illegal, much less the duty (hee hee, I wrote ‘duty’) tax on said prize would be cost-ineffective, a Beverage that Homer would HATE, although Lisa might find it enjoyable, A box of Snapple Orange-inality Herbal Tea will be included.

SO IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER (or Modify) YOUR GUESS FOR TERRY’S FINISHING TIME AT THE HARPETH HILLS KILLER DEATH FLYING MONKEY MARATHON

Monkey Mode

There’s 3 days left… well really now just two as the twilight of the Thursday Sun fades in the West. OKay, so 2 days… and let me tell you… I AM A HUNGRY MOFO! Oh my goodness! I have been eating everthing that I can get my hands on. I ate 3 Clif Bars this afternoon, just so that I wouldn’t shove candy in my mouth. I mean, a bag of Smarties does sound good right now!

Like the title suggests, I am starting to get into Monkey Mode. I have looked at the Map and they sure do promise hills! I wonder if the running bib doubles as a sickness bag because if you look at the Map Profile on the MAP Page, it’s insane. Someone would have to be a maniac to go across these hills… You are never on a flat spot, wait, I take that back… the first 10 feet of the race is semi-flat. But you are either going UP HILL or you are going DOWN HILL.

I need to podcast this, just for the potential Train Wreck that is Terry on Sunday.

A big difference than Rutledge is that you are never in one direction very long. Where as in Rutledge, you were running either North, East, South or West… At The Monkey, you are running… SSW then W then NNW then NWN, the SE then SSEENNEWNENWWES

So, at least the directional changes will help mitigate any FREAKIN’ 15-20mph headwind that might be present on race day. And seeing that it’s 3, “no 2 sir”, days out I thought I would peek at the weather. 3 days out here in East Tennessee and the weather people have about a 75% chance of being 50-50 about the weather. “If the Storm ain’t not git hare t’ay… it’ll git hare t’m'row”

I dont want to see about the Wind yet...

I don't want to see about the Wind yet...

Another that is nice despite the HILLS being wind blockers is the number of trees around. Reminds me of Chickamauga 2007 when the trees provide a HUGE reprieve from the Sun when it finally broke out. So good wind blockers and sun blockers, even if the leaves ar down. That will allow us to see the Killer Death Flying Monkeys before they attack.

carpe simiam. seize the monkey.

I’ll be posting a Pre-Monkey Race Week Post, but I thought I would share this communication from the Main Monkey Race Director, just so you can get a feel for what kind of race we are going to have this weekend:

Friends, runners and monkeymen, lend me your ears.

I come to bury your hopes, not to praise them.
The evil that monkeys do flies around them;
While the good is oft interred with their victims’ bones;
So it may be with you. Your humble race director
Hath told you that monkeys were ambitious:
If it were so, it was their grievous hunger,
And grievously may you fulfill it.
(Here, under leave of runners and the rest ???
For running may be an honorable escape;
So are they all, a most honorable escape )???
Come I to speak in advance of your funeral.
You were a runner, faithful and just to the race:
But monkeys, I say, were ambitious;
And while you may be an honorable runner.
And will bring many others with you to the park,
Whose bellies the ravenous monkeys will fill:
Did this in monkeys seem ambitious?
When that the slow had cried, monkeys hath wept.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet we say they are ambitious;
And we are all honorable men.
You all did see that on the Shell Hill
I thrice presented them a kingly sacrifice,
Which they did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet runners say they are ambitious;
And, sure, runners are honorable men.
I speak not to disprove what runners speak,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did fear monkeys once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to run from them?
O judgment! Thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason! Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with you runners,
And I must pause till you come back to me.

Oh yes. And again, packet pickup will be at the Gordon JCC on November 22, 2008 between 2pm and 4pm. The JCC is located at 801 Percy Warner Blvd, Nashville, TN 37148. This is less than 2 miles from the race start/finish area. Here is a map to the GJCC: http://tinyurl.com/MonkeyPacketPickup . Packet pickup will also be available race morning adjacent to the starting line.

Travel safely. Finish your wills. Holler with comments or questions. Bring some chow. See you soon. In fact, see you in under 100 hrs…

Guess My Times, Win Crap

t’s that time again! It’s time to Guess My Time and WIN CRAP Special Marathon edition! There are more ways to win and there is going to be a Grand Piece of Crap Prize for an Overall Guess of my time.

Overall Time Contest

Using the Overall Time Form, submit your guess of my combined time of Rutledge AND Harpeth Hills. Your deadline to do participate is 10am on Saturday November 15th (Day of Race of the Rutledge Marathon).

Winners will be announced as soon as either:

2) My next of Kin can get to the computer

Typically for these contests, I try to give you some information that will help you “Guess” what my time will be. However, I have never run marathons within 8 days of each other, so I don’t have anything to really give you. But I will supply my past marathon times to help.

*******

  • You can enter as many times as you want, but only your most recent entry based on the timestamp will be your official guess
  • This will be an Over/Under format, meaning that the closest time over or under my finishing time will be valid to win.
  • The Official Time as reported at the event website will be the End-all-Be-all result. Should no result be posted, then my watch time will be used.
  • Winners will have to send me their postal address to gain their prize unless I already have it. Giving me their address subjects them to such things as world domination, Christmas Cards, and other random items (and sometimes embarrassing items) sent to their homes.
  • There are no restriction for past winners… Enter and Win and Enter Again.

Holy Audiophiles Batman, It’s Gravity@1053!

That’s right peeps, the 22nd episode of Gravity@1053′ Running Podcast has hit The Web! I know! WTF!

So this Episode is part of my running of the World Wide Festival of Races Worldwide Half Marathon!

Stuff that I talk about during this episode:

1) Runner’s Dilemma of Pooping

2) Some things that I have learn this training season in regards to pooping on the run

3) Mid October Update of my Training for the Rutledge Marathon (11-15-08) and Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon (11-23-08)

4) My Pacing and the State of the Greenway at 3rd Creek

*******

Note: there might be small pauses in the audio, those were my triggers to add some beeping or other sound effects to indicate transition between subjects (edits). I didn’t remember about them until AFTER I exported to MP3 format and well, I wasn’t going to go back and try to fix it at that point.

Part 1 was a little easier to edit and get posted. Part 2 should be uploaded (hopefully) early next week and I “Want” to do a 3 part series on my 2 Marathons… one before the 1st one, one between the two and a recap episode.

Taper minus 10

Roger that!

There are 10 DAYS, well technically 9 and some change and I will on the road to complete the first of two marathons back to back. This will be a first for me, as I have done 2 marathons MONTHS apart, not 8 days… and it’s no wonder that I will be officially qualified to join the Marathon maniacs.

During my 12 miler last night, I did two things. First, I realized that I am more anxious about these two marathons since I have never done this before. I don’t know what to expect. Do I hold back on the first one to save energy for the next one? Do I “race for a PR” in the first and then just survive for the second one since i would be so sore anyway, why have two mediocre times and have one good one and one not-good one? Will I recover enough from the first to be ready for the second – which is marketed as a Damn Tough Course? I don’t know… where as I know what to expect from the one and done marathon season, I don’t know here.

So, what does any good statistician do to find data? Research! I contact the Ever Pretty and Uber Humble Triathlete Shirley Perly on what she does between close races. She does an insane amount of races in a short period of time and even combines this with air travel. Her VERY supportive husband Dave is behind her in her quest to run marathons in every state… and on top of marathons she does Triathlons and so, she is always on the go. Now what’s good for Shirley won’t necessarily be good for Terry, BUT it’s the theory behind what she does that I was looking for the most. She was able to give me a great gameplan on what I am going to do post race and that’s content for another blog post.

Second, I PRACTICED! A dress rehearsal if you will of the finish line. I ran 12 miles yesterday and actually ran a Tempo pace for the mid mileage run. it’s the last of the longer-faster distances that I will run and I was very pleased with the results of the run. As something that I do and encourage others to do, is to visualize the finish line. I don’t have any idea of the Rutledge Marathon course, to know the spots on the course when I begin my Finishing Sequence.

Last Night, I started with close to 2 miles left in my 12 mile run. I had been running fast all evening, so my legs were tired and closer to what they would feel like during the race. In my practice Finish, I keep well aware of the mileage left to go… 2 miles, 1.75, 1.5 etc. From here, I can usually Do The Math to know if it is going to be close, if I shooting for a goal time. As was last year’s Chickamauga Marathon when I finished in a PR time with 35 seconds to spare.

I was also visualizing other runners out on the course and locking in on a certain runner ahead of me. Either to try to pass before the finish or use as a rabbit (pacer) to get me to the finish line. Using a pace takes the mental effort of thinking about keeping pace, but you can “disengage” your mind and either stare ahead at the course or the time clock. It’s a trick to keep you forgeting how much pain you are in.

In the last 0.25 miles, I imagined that I could see the Time Clock and started my “Final Approach” where I begin to accelerate and estimate who I can pass or if I just need to keep the pace that I am in.

I am a little sore today, which is to be expected given the speed that I ran yesterday. The speedwork won’t help me for my race next Saturday, but it will give me a mental boost.

My biggest concern right now is the course. I know that Harpeth Hills is going to be, well, hilly. Rutledge… not sure. It’s suppose to be “flat” but “flat” in East Tennessee is really gently rolling. Of course, that might be advantageous, because I would be working some different muscles in the Hills of Harpeth. So we will see…

Running Math

Here’s some new math for you…

26.2 +26.2 = Bronze

Okay, maybe there are too many numbers there. Let’s Try again

harpeth + rut= maniac

How about that? I know that maybe one or two people will know exactly what my two equations mean. Some of you might have a clue, some of you might have an idea and the rest are scratching your heads saying “I’m outta here, this dude is WHACK!”

If you happened to hear my last Gravity@1053′ Episode #21 when I said that I had Fall Marathon plans and those changed pretty quickly last week, that is the equation above. I know it’s not like ordering from the Picture Menu at McDonald’s but it’s pretty obvious right? No. You need me explain? Really? You Sure? Okay… Really?

OKay, (math) class has begun:

The first picture is the logo for Harpeth Hills Attacking Flying Monkey Marathon which is my Marathon de L’automne. How can you just not like the Monkey?

The Second picture is of a marathon that My Lovely and Talented Wife found for me. I bet she is kicking herself now. The second picture is the “graphic” I found for the Rutledge Marathon, a brand spanking NEW marathon in our local area (within 100mi). The Catch? It’s one week before the Harpeth Hills Marathon.

So what is a dude to do? Buhhhhhhhhh, RUN both… DUH!

So, what it would look like is run the Rutledge Marathon on Saturday November 15th, then the following Sunday November 23rd run Harpeth Hills. No, I am not crazy, okay… well, maybe just a little. So that segue right to the meaning of the last picture.

That last picture is a 8bit picture from Marathon Maniacs website. Running both marathons would qualify me for the Bronze (most entry) Level of the Marathon Maniacs.

So that is the news from Planet3rry Headquarters: Two marathons, Back-to-Back Weekends, certified Maniac. You’ll be able to follow my training and I may even make a Widget in WordPress just for this Glorious, Magnificant, Outlandish attempt. Next thing I’ll tell you is that I am going to run an Ultra…
