Howdy there, I am back and in full force. My trip went smoothly from start to finish. I will have a separate section for my Samoa trip, I do not think that I could fit it all here.

I got back last Monday, and it was not until Wednesday morning that I was back on EST. A few naps helped. I ran Autumnfest 8k on Thursday morning, Jen volunteered since she was not in shape for that distance. We then went to the Velases for Thanksgiving, which is becoming a wonderful tradition. The past few years we have fried a turkey, but this year it was the traditional baking of two turkeys. Marty’s cousin Karl was in town form California, whom I met in California while working a project with Chase. Karl is also a brew master at Manhattan Beach Brewery.

Our tree is up but our outdoor lights are not yet. I still have rake leaves, string up the lights and get some other yard work for Jen’s Christmas open house this year.

Virginia lost to Va Tech (Boo) but Furman is going to the second round of NCAA I-AA football playoffs (YAY).

Samoa Day Two – Exploration

Woke up about every hour this morning until I got up at 7:45am. I watched some TV or rather some football since most of the games are played in the afternoon (EST), it is morning here. We went at 9:30 to pick up our cars at Avis. I have a Toyota Echo, small car but it is decent for the island. THe roads here are pretty beat up. THere are buses that carry people along the road to different towns. Along on each side of the roads there are houses and businesses, most are run down. Some of the businesses are same as the states ACE Hardware, NAPA, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC.

We drove from our hotel out to the eastern side of the island. The water is beautiful and we have some good pictures of the ocean. THe road ends on the Northeast side of the island where we got out and went to the shore were there was bunch of coral that had been washed ashore. We took a few neat pieces and head back to town. We ate at McDonald’s since it was familiar. The food was about the same and we commented at the prices, which are a little higher than the States. We then went to Cost-U-Less which is the equivalent to a mini Sam’s Club. We got some snacks and some water. I think we are going to a beach resort for dinner tonight. I’m going to try to work out or run before dinner.

Football scores: UT 13 vs ND 17, UVa 16 vs Maryland 0, Furman 29 vs Ga Southern 22

I was going to rest until 4:30pm but then fell asleep until 6:30 which was our meeting tie to leave. Thank goodness for my haircut because now I can have bed head and it will be OK. Jen had left a message that she was going to bed, so I will leave her a message on her machine that she can get later. at 6:30 we went to the beach resort to eat dinner and try the Vailima, local beer. We found one car in the parking lot and the chairs leaned up against the tables. The so called tourist place was dead although it had an open sign. Richard commented that it must not be tourist season [we later found out that there is not a tourist season on the island.. at all, ever]. Given the road signs in American samoa, you’d never know if you were going in the right direction to get to a tourist place, or away for that matter.

We came back to the hotel and ate at the hotel’s Restaurant, The Equator. There were a few people there and is a really nice upscale place. Prices were high and the selection was limited. I had a Cobb Salad which was very tasty, the ham was very fresh (maybe made that day??). The vegetables were fresh as well and the portion size was rather large. So far I have not been able to weigh myself, so i do not know if I have lost any weight, I am guessing so.

After dinner we went to the KS Mart to get some beer. The place was like a meat locker. It was a sizeable grocery store for the island with some sundries on one end and groceries/produce on the other. Their prices, again, were a little more expensive than in the States, which poses the question: If the minimum wage is about 1/2 of the States, why is the food higher? Can people really afford it?

I got two of the Vailima beer, one regular and one “gold”. Tom got the same plus two of the New Zealand beers, I am hoping to bring back some bottles for Marty but not sure if I’ll be able to. Alcohol is about 1.2 of the State prices, less import tariffs, I presume.

We checked out the fitness room in the hotel which consists of 3 treadmills and 2 stair climbers. The treadmills are made by Landice which is a good brand so I plan to run on Sunday.

Look what I did

Haircut

Notice something different? Yep, you guessed it… I had Jen cut my hair. Why? well, I was trying to let it grow out, and was trying to get some thing like Johnny Depp or John Travolta (in Swordfish) or even Harry Connick Jr. However, I have enough curl in my hair to keep it from lying straight. If I want straight hair, I have to use a straight iron to mash my hair and then apply a bunch of product to keep it tame. If I do not straighten my locks or have any product in my hair, I look like this:

Yard Work

It was a rather surprise for the people at church because they had just seen me at church service a mere 4 hours earlier with my long hair and when we went to our Purpose Driven Life class, it was short!

This weekend was a good football weekend, everyone came out of it with a “W”. UT had a conference win against arch-rival Alabama, Furman shut out Elon, UVa beat up on Duke and the Packers won. The only thing left to find out is if my Fantasy Football team, The Knoxvillians, can muster a win this week. I hope so because I am next to last and there is not much separating us.

We went to our first Saltshaker on Friday night and one the guys is a big photographer. He has a 6.0 MP camera that he primarily uses. I was very impressed with his work. It inspired me to get to learn more. If you know of any good photography theory website, please let me know.

Blue Bay and red squirrels

I didn’t watch most of the Green Bay game last night and I think that was a good thing. My second favorite team is the Titans, so it wasn’t a total loss. Still, I am very excited about the UT/Georgia game. It was a nail-biter up until the last second. I believe that it will good year for the Vols. My guess is that we will lose another game (either Notre Dame or South Carolina) but will end up winning the East but losing the SEC championship and we will win our bowl game. I’ll look back and see how well I am at this prediction.

Eric has been sick since Sunday. We think that we are passing a germ around since I was almost since on Tues/Wed. Eric was sick on Sunday/Monday and Jen has been feeling bad for the past few days with last night feeling yucky. The good news is that Pete is going to be visiting, so maybe we can share it with him! Haha

Yesterday at work, we collated, stuffed and address 1396 envelopes to go o American Samoa for our project. There were approximately 8 of us who worked from 10-3 non-stop except for lunch. There are the actual surveys that we will be collecting when we are there. hopefully, if send them ahead of time, we will get a better response rate. Today, I had the nice experience of having my 40 GB USB drive fail on me. And of course, the files that were on the drive had not been archive to another medium. Also, these file are extremely important to my work for Samoa. We found out that it had to do with a problem with the file systems, since it worked with Windows 98 on a different computer. Our group only has one CD burner, so we took the important files off the drive and I am in the process right now of reformatting.

If you don’t watch Saturday Night Live, you should try to catch some of the this season’s shows. The debates have been the source of comedic relief and they have a deep well to draw from. Seth Meyers portrays john Kerry and Will Forte plays Bush. Seth gets my vote as having his character down, but nobody can beat Darrell Hammond and his Bill Clinton imitation. Darrell is by far the best President of all time, better than Chase doing Ford, or Carvey doing George Sr. Oh yeah, and Tina Fey is raow!

Observation on Sunday: Sunday, I ran 12 miles after church through my neighborhood. During this run, I could tell that winter is approaching. why you ask? Well, it was because of all of the road kill I passed while running. In less than 2 hours, I found 4 dead squirrels on the my course. Then when I was going to the Math Lab at night, I passed by another dead one. All these animals trying to get their nuts in order, but ended up getting splat!

Carbon Dating

10.18.04 Carbon Dating
Eric is over his sickness. Thursday and Friday he was still very clingy and lethargic. I am not sure if I posted that Eric came home early on Thursday from preschool, but he did. Friday was pretty quiet… I forgot what we did. Sheesh.

I ran on Saturday morning, but had to cut my 14 miles to 12.8 due to an “accident.” Only runners would really appreciate my dilemma and everyone else would think it was, er, icky. I was able to run the 12.8 with a 9:31 average mile pace, so that was a pleasant surprise. Later that morning, Pete and I did some yard work, he mowed and i put some fertilizer down. I would have liked to have gotten some seed down, but I missed my chance. We saw two wasp/hornet type anthropods that were eating a broken tree in my front yard. I will post the pictures when I download off Pete’s computer. I used some of Melalueca’s Prespot to kill them, as Prespot is an excellent ant killer. It worked, they stopped eating and began dying. I am anxious to find out what they were! Anyway, as a result of working outside, Pete was waylaid for the rest of the day with allergies. He’s just allergic to a little work.

We had a poop incident on Saturday afternoon. Eric, after making a deposit in his diaper, took it off and started to spread the joy around his crib. Need less to say there was a decontamination party with Pete and Janet cleaning Eric, Jen using Sol-U-guard to sanitize the crib and I was in charge of starting laundry (sheets, bumper guards, clothes…) After that incident, he was back to his old self. Jen and I were glad for Pete and Janet that Eric was back to his old self.

Janet, Jen and I went out to shop. I’m not sure all that we bought, but Eric got his Christmas present, the Incredi-block.

incrediblock

He really loves it. Cary Smith, whom I worked with at the SCC had gotten Peek-A-Block for her boy Jed and sung their praises.

UVA lost big this weekend. In their first real test to contend for their top 10 ranking, they were beat by a faster team. FSU was able to out gun UVA on about all fronts, they shut down their offense, they negated their defense, Hagans wasn’t as effective, Miller not as utilized, Lundy stopped, Big E got dinged up. UT on the other hand, escaped losing. After coming out strong in the first quarter, they had a lackluster rest of the game, even trailing for a part of it. Late TD sent them ahead of Ole miss and they came out of Oxford with a win. Had Eli still been there, errr, the result would have been different. Furman won, no details known.

A bunch of different stuff today

WAHOOWA, WAHOOWA
UNI-V, VIR-GIN-I-A
HOO-RAH-RAY, HOO-RAH-RAY
RAY! RAY! U-V-A!

UVA TD

Granted that Clemson is not as good of a team this year, but Virginia looked good out on the field. Despite the speed of Clemson’s defense, Virginia was able to make some adjustments to take control of the game in the second half. We still have Miami and Florida State still on the schedule, so those will not be easy, plus Va Tech is always an emotional game.

I found a pretty good shot of American Samoa, that little Island I will be working on in November. I am leaving on November 5th at 7:15am, I get into American Samoa at 9:35pm, with total flight time of 21hrs 20min. I leave on the 20th at 10:52pm and get back on the 22nd at 12:01pm. That is some major flight time!

America Samoa

Like I had in my previous post, I have been drinking myself silly. When I got home, I had some more diet coke, took an Aleve and felt better today. I am going to go swimming at lunch.

John A. Kelley, Marathoner, Dies at 97
By FRANK LITSKY

John A. Kelley, who ran 61 Boston Marathons, won two and became almost as celebrated as the race itself, died on Wednesday in South Yarmouth, Mass. He was 97.

Kelley was a Boston sports hero in the mold of Ted Williams, Bill Russell, Larry Bird and Bobby Orr, but of that illustrious group the only one home grown and the only amateur. He ran perhaps 1,500 races, including 112 marathons, and won 22 diamond rings, 118 watches, one refrigerator and no money.

He finished Boston 58 times, took second seven times and placed among the top-10 finishers 18 times. After his second victory, the next American winner at Boston was the unrelated John J. Kelley in 1957. When John J. won, he became known as Kelley the Younger and his predecessor and hero Kelley the Elder.

Even in his later years, he ran every day except one, the day before the Boston Marathon. But by 1992, when he was 84, his time at Boston had slowed to 5:58:36. That was his last full marathon. In 1993 and 1994, he ran only the last seven miles, starting at his statue on Heartbreak Hill. Starting in 1995, he was the grand marshal, riding in a convertible at the head of the race and waving to an adoring public.

In 1928, when Calvin Coolidge was president, Kelley ran his first marathon and finished 17th. A month later, in his first Boston Marathon, he became so tired that he started walking and, after 21 miles, dropped out. But he was hooked, and the Boston race became the center of his life.

He made three United States Olympic teams in the marathon, finishing 18th in Berlin in 1936 and 21st in London in 1948. The Olympics were canceled in 1940 because of war in Europe.

In 1950, he became the first road runner elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. That was the only time the officials waived the rule requiring that an athlete be retired at least five years, reasoning that he would never retire.

“For those who are in shape and can run this thing,” he once said, “I think it’s the greatest race in the world. I hope it goes on forever.”

Weekend Update (so long Jimmy Fallon)

09.27.04 – Weekend Update (so long Jimmy Fallon)
In some cases it seemed that the weekend went slowly and other times it seemed like it went fast. Funny how time is relative!

Saturday morning I got up around 5:45 and finally made it out to run at 6:15ish. I ran 10.25 miles around Farragut with a pretty fast time of 1:31, averaging an 8:58 pace. This is a whole minute faster per mile than I should have been going, but I wasn’t too upset. If my speed workouts (on Thursdays) aren’t going that great, I am getting some benefits from them. The run on Saturday was very easy, and I was not sore at all on Sunday. This weekend, I have the Big South Fork 17.5 mile Trail Run. We usually go camping this weekend, but because of Mary Kay and Eric logistics, we felt that it was better to forego the camping at this time and maybe try in the spring. I didn’t want my running to interfere too much anyway. This will be my 4th time that I have run the race and my PR for the course is 2hrs 51min. I think that I can do better than that this year and I can make it under 2:50.

I did not have a chance to put any pictures up, nor work on the website at all. If I had a larger USB drive, I could carry our whole jenandterry.com website on it and be able to edit it from – wherever. Currently, the website resides on my computer at home and my side of the website is on my flash drive since it is only 11 MB. I have been playing the eBay game to try to get one cheap, but so far I have been out bided each time.

Saturday, Jen had her customer appreciation day at LyLy Nails in Knoxville and so the boys were able to cause havoc by ourselves. Well, we didn’t cause to much trouble. After getting Jen set up with her table and stuff, we went to the bike store to check out the used bike sale. I am looking for a beater bike that I can take to school with little investment (in case it vanishes). We also went to Blue Ridge Mountain Sports to look at kid carriers for Eric. We found one from Kelty that was really nice. It was the Back Country model and Eric was having a blast in it.

Eric was walking more this weekend. I did get video of it that I can download off the camera, so hopefully, that will be up shortly. Of course, I have been saying that I would update the website for how long now? I know, I know.

UT won their homecoming game against Louisiana Tech. This particular game was pay per view in the area, so we listened to it on the radio. Sounds like we might have a better idea of who the quarterback is going to be now. UVA won again too. They are doing very well this season, winning under the radar. Furman lost this weekend, but just barely. They lost in overtime to Pittsburgh (Div I-A) team, whom they were leading by 14 points in the 4th quarter. Green Bay also lost, again, this weekend.

Clear skies for a Monday

09/20/04 – Clear skies for a Monday
First let me comment on the UT/ Florida game from Saturday night. What a game! The entire game was played decently by both teams and I think that had we lost it would have not been the end of the world. However, since we won and in such dramatic fashion, people are excited around here. The kicker missed an extra point to tie the game in the late fourth quarter. With an eminent loss, the UT defense stepped up to give the offense one last chance to score. The offense moved the ball up the field to give the kicker one last chance to win the game, a modest 50 yard field goal attempt. It could have been a 55 yard attempt, because when he split the uprights, the ball still had plenty of height. I believe, had we made the extra point, the coach would have played for overtime and we who know how it would have ended up. We were having a hard time keeping up with their receivers, so I don’t think that overtime would have been good at this junction. In related football news, Virginia and Furman both won their respected games. I can not say the same for the Packers, they lost to ‘Da Bears’.

Saturday morning, I did get out of the house at 5:45 and ran 16.5 miles around the community. I left my neighborhood and went out around Farragut, through some subdivisions, around the high school and then back to my home. THe problem with my subdivision is that there are hills! Big ones, so when i am coming home, the hills really slow me down and I end up walking up parts of them. I was pretty pleased with my overall performance. My legs did not get heavy until mile 13 and they were not sore after the run. With that said, tonight is slated for my 5 mile course in the subdivision, hills and everything!

I picked up another tutor on Tuesdays. I currently have one of the women swimmers whom I tutor physics, and now I am getting a pre-calculus student. Not sure what sport she is but we will see.

For those of you who know that in a few days, I am getting older, I have no problems with it. It will be my “Rolling Rock” birthday, brought to you by the number 33.

Gator Madness

09/17/04 – Gator Madness
As the game that is played on Saturday night comes closer, the people in Knoxville become more and more crazy. With the weather that we are having, it might be related, but I think that the rivalry between Tennessee and Florida might have something to do with it. If we win, the scruffy little city will be abuzz and a National Championship will be the talk of the town. If not, people will be depressed for a week until the next game. Such is the life of a Tennessee Fan. I was there the last time we won at home (1998) and we are favored by 3 points, so we will see.

Eric is making leaps and bounds, almost literally. More on that later. My computer is almost together, I have to install some software, which I hope to do this weekend. Yesterday, he mimicked me with nodding my head up and down and today he shook his head no. Not sure if he knows what that means, but it can’t be long.

Since the weather is crazy, I am not sure if I will be doing 16 miles tomorrow morning. I hope so, though. If I can get out of the house at 5:30am (yes, that’s early) I can get most of the mileage in the dark. I don’t particularly like running in the dark, but it will make it more comfortable for me plus I’ll have little to no traffic. I swam at the the Athletic Center today at lunch. I think I swam for about 20 minutes and went a little more than half a mile. Pretty slow, but since I have not swam since the Trideltahon, I thought that I would take it easy.

Family & Football

What a nice long weekend we had this past weekend. The Vols won. The Cavs won, although Matt Schaub is out for a while.

Chris is coming up from Huntsville this weekend to see Eric and go to the football game. UT plays Marshall on Saturday at 4pm, check it out on ESPN2. We’ll be in the student section near the 40 yard line or so, 11 rows up.

Eric is becoming a chunk! When I get home in the evenings I swear that he is bigger than when I left. He is filling out and becoming stronger each day. His grip is outstanding for his size, if I could be that strong. We gave him a bath last night and it was the first bath that he actually enjoyed. He was smiling and looking in the big mirror in the bathroom. It could have been the finger puppet theatre that I put on for him that made him so cheerful. Nah, it was just a good time. He is cooing and being vocal a lot more now. He will babble a little when he is by himself in his playyard or crib but he grunts loudly!

That is it for now… maybe more tomorrow…
