Christmas, now 50 percent off

I am back at the computer now. Surprisingly enough, I didn’t go through withdrawl over the past 8-10 days or so that I have had none to little computer access. Of course, now I am behind and so I have to play catch-up (not to be confused with mustard, which I did yesterday in the bathroom) on everything that is in the Planet3rry eLife.

As, for Christmas, it was a wierd trip this year. It wasn’t “bad” or not enjoyable, it was just different. I never left property until it was time to go. I did go on a Wild Turkey hunt (and no, it wasn’t the 100 proof Wild Turkey) but the “it goes well with cranberry sauce” wild turkey. As for My tradtions that I had been lamenting over the last few posts before Christmas, I never saw Christmas Vacation, the movie. Not even a part of it. I did catch a part of A Christmas Story… and by a part, I mean around 15 minutes total of it… and not all at once. Melanie-In-Law’s boyfriend (JOE JOE JOE), had control of the remote (again, something new to the household) and he kept it on the History Channel for most of the time. And I LOVE the History Channel, so I was mesmerizered when they were going over the Christmas Light Technology of the past 50 years. In the past, I could either turn on Football or A Christmas Story and the remote would be “conveniently lost” for a day.

There wasn’t much singing in the house during Christmas. Usually, Lola guilts strong arms the Kids to sing a few Christmas Songs and I usually play Pool while they sing. Well, there was only Melanie-In-Law on the piano, something that My Lovely and Talented Wife usually does.

It could have been that My Lovely and Talented Wife was Down and Out with some illness, that we go medicine for now that we are back. We had The Cousins (Brian 9.10 and Will 7.4) babysit entertain The Kids, which was a relief to me. We have Brian 9.10 who is a reincarnation of James Calhoun, as he is The Great Compromiser and then there is Will 7.4 who is The Informant. I got to spend time chatting with David-In-Law about “stuff” since we have alot in common and also Amy-In-Law (wife of David and mother of The Cousins).

Probably the coolest part of the whole Christmas in Loris excursion, which even beat out BURNING STUFF for 5 hours, was Playing Guitar Hero with David-In-Law and Will 7.4. I had a BLAST! It was awesome playing Guitar, David-In-Law playing Bass and Will 7.4 was singing. I am actually hoping that we can play it again soon and gives me incentive to practice my shredding skills. FUN FUN FUN.

There are other things, but those will come later, I need to Spread the Wealth around my responsibilities and I don’t want to neglect things, like I have been in the past. Well, that is… not blogging as much.

Christmas Update, Again

You can go ahead and scratch the “I Haven’t baked anything” off the Things I Haven’t Done This Year. This evening, I made some Chocolate-Peanut Butter Marshmellow Squares (GFCF, of course) and then there was the Sugar Cookies, but I used the Vanilla Wafer recipe and they turned out like mini cakes. Go figure. Anyway… they are pretty good, I think I know what I can do next time to make them more wafery. I also made a batch of Sugar Cookie, the real recipe, for My Lovely and Talented Wife to have as an activity with The Kids and cookie cutters. We got a HUGE plastic container of cookie cutters, there are like 100 or so in there. I can see the results now:

“Daddy, this is my Christmas 4 -Leaf Clover”

I wish I had my computer ready… the sun was pretty intense this morning and I have some Macro(ish) pictures of some christmas lights that I was testing last night. Even in ISO100, I was still shooting around 200 or so. I probably should learn how to change the F-stop in Stella and remember it, as in my Canon AV-1 35mm, you have to do it Old Skool.

Still haven’t see Christmas Vacation yet…

Christmas Again

[ed. I wrote most of this on Friday, figured out my WordPress Woes,. but didn't get to post until Monday]

One of the nice things about working for the University is there are a number of “Administrative Closing” days inherent in the system. This means that you don’t have to worry about taking time off around Christmas to actually have something of a Christmas Holiday. Given that Christmas is on a Thursday, this would mean that most would have the 26th off giving them a 4 day Holiday… although technically, not much happens in (any companiy’s) offices on Christmas Eve… unless there is an interesting “Office” “party” with “mistletoe” and the holiday “yule” “log” when “Santa” is “checking” his “list” to find out who has been “naughty” and “nice”.

The University will be closed all of next week, starting Friday after work. So I get a 9 day weekend. This was one of the perks that swayed me to this job, because it wasn’t the salary amount. Now, I do have to come to work on the 29th… and I only get off on January 1st. But, I will worry about that next year… sheesh.

This year has had its share of traditions and alternations to traditions. For Example… I try to watch A Christmas Story at least twice before going to the In Laws house for Christmas. I can usually get the TV on TBS who has the annual 24hrs of A Christmas Story (you know a Gen-Xer is the scheduler). there, I can watch enough “parts” of the movie to see the entire thing. Well, AS-IF I really need to watch the movie to know what’s going on… I mean… I’ll just play it in my head.

The other movie tradition is Christmas Vacation. Now, I usually would catch this on TV while I was making some Holiday Bakeries… but this year, we don’t really watch TV anymore and I am not baking anything. Seriously. I’d love to make some Soy Milk Fudge… but I don’t have a recipe. I did have the DIVINE inspiration to make some Truffles with Coconut Milk/Cream. Perhaps, that is something I can do in South Carolina. Rumor has it that my in-laws have come up to the mid-2000s and have gotten Wifi. That beats the dial-up they had and perhaps I can be online during the downtime there, if any. Oh… downtime… right.

So, I haven’t seen Christmas Vacation, yet. There is always Monday’s Date Night… don’t worry, I’m not really thinking of a date watching Christmas Vacation.

Another thing that has been altered this year is Christmas Songs. I pooled my Christmas Collection in iTunes and it says that I have 455 Christmas songs which will last 1 day with 1.33 GB of Holidaze music… both includes the Classics and some the Comedy and some the Classic Comedy and some the “What-Tha?”. Typically, my Holiday Season starts with me listening to the U2′s version of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and from there I listen to Run-D.M.C.’s Christmas in Hollis then to Jimmy Buffett’s Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rhum then to XTC’s Thanks for Christmas and finalize the beginning of The Season with The Twelve Days of Christmas by Bob and Doug MacKenzie. “What are you doin’?”

Well, I haven’t heard Run-D.M.C or Jimmy Buffett (that specific song) because I have been listening to the 24hr Christmas Music station here in Knoxville B97.5 and in the evening it’s Christmas with Delilah and when it comes to Easy Listening, she is the sappy-love easy listening, so although it’s been some the classics… she’s not going to play Run-D.M.C. Since I stay up late, Delilah goes off the air and then is followed up by the “I Can’t Believe I am actually listening to John Tesh” John Tesh. And it’s train wreck for me… not that I would ever “admit” to listening to Tesh, but there is this thing he does called “Intelligence for your Life” and it’s like CRACK to me! Little informational tidbits with teasers to keep you waiting until the next segment.

Some examples (from Tesh.com) are:

Now that it is Monday, I didn’t get to post a Photohunters post NOR a Success Sunday… It’s been like FOREVER since I have done either one of them. Well, it’s not like I haven’t been thinking of them. I just haven’t been writing them. Now that we have My Lovely and Talented Wife’s new laptop, we are going to start getting it ready, which’ll mean that I’ll have a laptop to use and possible get more computer time.

Can’t Spell Parties without IEP

because then it would just be RATS! [queue Schoolhouse Rocks]

Okay… still no step for Terry and no great step for the Running Universe. Although I did get this Wicked Cool (for the Northerners), Count (for the Southerners, I mean, East Tennesseans), Jolly Good (for the British), Fooking Goot (for the Scottish), Gnarly Dude (for the West Coasts) and WOO HOO (for Homer Simpson) NASA hat that I can wear this winter! I am VERY excited.

Earlier this Month (as in 12.5 to 12.8) we went on a cruise to the Bahamas… the short version, because we are now DAYS removed, was that it was not long enough (wahahaha). We were on the Monarch of the Seas with Royal Caribbean to Nassau for a day and then to CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s Island). This was a business trip for My Lovely and Talented Wife, as she had to “earn” a spot into the workshop that was being hosted by the Group Leaders. So filled with fun, there was learning and inspiration.

I’ll be posting some pictures on my Flikr site… I need to get my Flikr Badge back here on this website… As well as figure out how to get the Facebook Flickr badge as well. I had been hoping to get some camera lens shopping in, but the Bahamas didn’t really have good electronics (that was advertised) near the ship and the second port was scrubbed due to high winds and rain. I don’t think they had anything like that anyway…

As with almost everything Cruise related, it was very fun and enjoyable! Can’t wait to go on another one.

I had THREE Christmas Parties yesterday! First was The Elder’s Christmas party at his school. I went there in the morning and helped with the “Reindeer Food” Station. Helping the kids pour some oats into a tin and then pour a “small” amount of glitter into it “so that the Reindeer could see it from the sky” (wink wink). Anyway, the Reindeer will be able to see me, since I came back with some glitter on me. For being Kindergarteners, they really weren’t all that neat and tidy… glitter was everywhere!

Then, after The Elder’s party, there was MY 40hr Job’s Christmas party, which was a luncheon at a local Bar and Grill. Unfortunately, there was NO Holiday Libations… it would have made it MUCH MORE exciting. Instead we had some nice “traditional” Holiday fare, such as Turkey, green beans, rolls, mashed potatoes, gravy. Then we went back to the office and had desserts. Being that I “forgot” my dessert because I was coming from The Elder’s party, I was a little weary about hanging out there, worried that the Dessert Police would get me. No one noticed, so I didn’t say anything. Our office’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.

Then, I went home, were we hosting My Lovely and Talented Wife’s networking group’s Christmas Party. Boy O Boy… it was actually really fun. Although for Blog Material, it was kinda lean.

But this morning we had The Elder’s OT part of the IEP. Now, My Lovely and Talented Wife may have a different perspective but it seems that our IEP team actually cares for our kid and is doing what they can to maximize everything for him. It was almost like an IEP Party in itself! And I am VERY excited, but we may have found The Elder a swim team…

I am having some WordPress issues. I have upgrade to WP 2.7 without much fanfare, but I had a number of plugins that needed upgrading. Now, I seem to be having some Internal Server Errors (500) that are causing WordPress to soft-crash. Also, my Tiny MCE in my Visual is no where to be seen… So, I have a few things to work out. I am not a big fan of the side menus as my plugin for the condensed menus of WP previous was much faster and more efficient, but who I am to argue over progress.

ASD Athletes is coming along. I am still in the process of filling out the IRS form 1023, which is the application for IRS tax-deductibleness. I am having to create some sort of “Board” or other “Leadership” structure. So, I am working on getting that and some of the other Narratives that you have to include. It’s a rather lengthy form. My plans is to have that in place early next year, then get some heavy marketing out there and maybe have enough funds to start collect applications by summer with some Fall Sports!

2008 Rutledge Marathon Race Report

Normally when I do a race report, especially a longer race report, I use a A-F Grading System for different aspects of the Race, but since the 2008 Rutledge Marathon was the inaugral running, I don’t think it’s quite fair to grade things, especially compared to other marathons that have larger budgets and have worked out some of the kinks of race logistics.

Friday night, I had just about everything packed and ready to go. I was anticipating having to rush around in the morning and having to battle the kids to let me out of the door… only to leave them with My Lovely and Talented Wife in their meltdown mode. However, despite using the microwave to heat up water for my Thermos and other noises in the kitchen, they didn’t wake up and I only left about 5 minutes late.

Rutledge, TN is a Rural City about 35 minutes of Downtown Knoxville and so while everything is right off of Route 11, I was beginning to worry that I had missed the race start location because it seemed like I was driving and driving. And it didn’t help that it was RAINING! Arriving to the marathon start, I proceeded to park and since it was being Staged at Ritter Farms, the parking lot was a field… a wet field. I began wonder if my Civic was going to get out in a few hours, because with the mud pits being generated and the rain not stopping… I might just have to run home.

Not 1 minute out of the car, I received a text from my Support Crew, I Run for my 1.5 Lives Susan, that she was here. I told her that I was heading to get my number and we met up at the barn that was being staged for Race Registration. She told me that her GPS had told her Ritter Farms was at a different location and that she would have been here sooner if she hadn’t turned around. That’s locations in East Tennessee for you…[ed. note: I tried to bring Ritter Farms up on a Google Map and 1) it's TOTALLY in the wrong place, like Susan Said and 2) The Photos for this region do not get very detailed when trying to zoom in]

I can’t thank Susan enough for volunteering on being my Support crew. Not only is she Pregnant, but she was also on a vacation weekend with some friends and her husband in the Pigeon Forge (near Dollywood) area. I didn’t even have to use a Jedi Mind Trick to coerce her get her to come to the marathon. And had not she shown up, I would have TOTALLY understood. Not only was the forecast for low-mid 50s but it was supposed to rain until NOON. But Again, It’s East Tennessee… if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.

Now, this was the first time that I used a specific “Support” crew. In past marathons, I have had Cheering Crews (My Lovely and Talented Wife et al) and I have used the aid that has been on the course. This was the first time that I had preplanned to have stuff ready for me. Now, it helped that it was a double loop and that I would be returning to the course start to start the second loop.

In a Canvas Grocery Bag, I included 2 sports bottles: one labeled WATER and one labeled GATORADE. I Can’t remember everything else that was in there except for the very important STROLLER PACK. When I was going over what I had and when I would potential need it, I pulled the Stroller Pack out of the bag and asked,

“Have you heard my most recent podcast?”

“Uhhhhhhhh, which one?”

“About Poop.”

“Oh yeah, I have.”

“OKay, this is “The Stroller Pack”, if I ask for this, things went wrong”, holding up the gallon sized Ziplock bag filled with things that I found useful in my recent rash of unscheduled “Pit Stops.”

We waited around for quite a while, and it was very evident that the 7:35am marathon start was going to pushed back. Susan had overheard that someone received an email saying the marathon would be pushed back(and the website DOES have the updated time). But I never received one. Which was fine because the later start would help with the Sun coming up and although it was still raining would add some ambient light to the course. Around 8am, they herded us (haha, farm reference) to the Race Start.

As we were going over Pre-Race announcements we were blinded by light from the Sun. It had broken through the clouds and I was beginning to question my choice of wearing a wind breaker. However, it was still kind of windy and there were still clouds in the sky… and it was still cold, so having the windbreaker was a good way to 1) Break the Wind, 2) Stay Dry and 3) Regulate Temperature. AND I had a Support Crew, that if I ditched the jacket, it would be retreived!

So around 8:10, the gun, which was VERY LOUD, went off and we started running. In about a 1/4 mile, everyone was greeted with a head wind. A nice head wind. Although the actual weather conditions were erratic, the wind was constant, both in direction and in intensity. So for the first 7 miles we had somewhere between a 10-15mph headwind. It was strong enough to keep flags flapping in the wind and you could hear the metal clasps banging on the Flagpole. I don’t think anyone got video of the wind, I had meant to, but I got distracted with the whole marathon “thing” going on.

The “Official” Support on the course was really good. There were Support tables at Miles 1.5, 6.2, 7.9 and 10.9 which also meant that you got them again at 14.6, 19.3, 21 and 24 (website lists one more spot, but I can’t remember it… but that’s my problem!). At all of the Support areas you had: Water, Gatorade, Pretzels, Bananas, Oranges, PowerGels, PowerBars, and the PowerGummies. With the on-course support this good, I never had to use any of the Gel Packs that I brought, I was able to get everything on the course. And in the later miles when I needed my water bottle filled, they had enough to do it… and at the last stop, did it for me!

Now MY Support Crew had made signs! I don’t have the pictures hereyet , but I will post them when I get them and can get mine together! They were AWESOME. I don’t want to spoil them now, but they we VERY well done, and funny. In fact, the people that I was running with liked them as well.

It was difficult to catch the split times in the first loop, mainly because some of the mileage markers were spray painted on the ground and so if you didn’t see the split, you missed it. So, I know that my first 2 miles were in 19 flat, which was a 9:30min pace. I felt GREAT at this pace and with PLENTY of runners ahead, the wind wasn’t a factor until after the 2 mile mark when runners started to seperate. By Mile 3, I was already in at a 10min pace. The Wind was relentless and I was drafting behind runners to avoid having to battle the wind.

The course really wasn’t all that hilly. There was one very steep, but very short hill, everything else was pretty gradual. So, the hills were really a non-issue. For the 1st 7 miles of the loop, the course was on the side of Highway 11S except for some small sections. The Police presence was very good and there was never a point that I felt like target to the cars, nor did I have anything thrown at me. The Wind made it pretty cold for the first part of the loop and so I was glad to have the Windbreaker.

Around Mile 4, I started running with (after drafting for about a mile) a girl duo. One of the girls it was her 1st half marathon race and she was shooting for a 2:10 time. This was also her first time at this distance and after quizzing her on her current training, i was pretty confident that she would make the 2:10 time, but there was always the wind to deal with.

Unfortunately, I had to stop at the PortaJohn at the Water Station at Mile 4.4 and I lost 4 minutes in there. I have NO idea where the time went, but I was trying to avoid a major Malfunction and I DID! Castrophy Avoided. And now I had a mission… catch back up with the girls that I was running with earlier and get them to a 2:10 finish.

At Mile 7 we had the turn around point and so the wind would be at our backs. YAY! We’d Have a Tailwind! YAY! The Slow first part of the loop would be averaged out with a faster and easier 2nd section of the loop! YAY! The turn around dropped us in a road parallel to Highway 11S and lower by about 10 feet, thus having the buildings and trees protecting us from the wind. BOO! In Fact, on the second part of the 1st loop, it got warm enough that I had to take off my windbreaker because it was keeping me TOO warm! And then it rained for a short spell, then the sky broke open and there were some spots of blue in the sky… but the wind… never let up.

Somewhere around Mile 9, I caught back up with the girls from the first section. They were still running strong, but a little worn down. Looking at my watch, I knew that it would be kinda pushing it to make it in 2:10, but I divulged to them that I caught back up with them to make sure they would make it in their goal time.

I saw Susan somewhere around Mile 10-11 and I panicked! How did she get there? Um, her car. Could she get back to the race start by the time that I got there so that I could get my supplies… the things you think while running. Of course Terry, she has a CAR! Duh! Okay, disaster averted! And I got to see the signs that she had made… YAY because silly me thought she was just going to be at the Race Start/Finish area.

At Mile 12, it was final approach for my new Runner Friends. Of course, she told me her name, but I failed to remember what it was and the results aren’t posted for me to cheat and see what it is. I felt good at this point, so keeping pace for her was easy for me, but the distance had taken somewhat of a toll on her. Although she didn’t ask for it, I immediately went into “active coaching” mode and started coaching her in that last mile. Since she was fatigued, it was fixing her form/posture and breathing. Then to concentrate on the course ahead.

At one point, she said something and I immediately blurted out, “Less Talking, More Breathing.” So she concentrated and then in a Terry-Like move, in the last 0.1 of a mile, out of the blue, she took off and sped up to the finish line. I’m pretty sure it was 2:11-2:12 finishing time… I don’t know at this point.

Now, as I was, coming through the turnaround, there was my Support Crew, taking pictures! So, I should have a number of good Facebook Profile pictures to rotate through! But the best part was when Susan Said,

“What Do You Need?”

“Gatorade.”

“You want to leave your jacket?”

“Sure,” I replied, totally forgetting that I had been pampered with being sheltered from the wind the last 6 miles and just had to deal with some rain and some heat…

So, I had a FULL bottle of liquid and I was ready to go! And it was only 0.2 of mile before I had to deal with the wind again. I caught up with another runner just as I was starting the 2nd Loop. There was a gust of wind and a splattering of rain and she said:

“I’m going to run behind you for a bit”

“Sure, go right ahead, I was drafting behind some runners at the start of the race, so tuck behind me”

We ended up running for a little bit together chatting about which marathon this was and which ones we had done… Joked about the weather… commented on the police presence on the course. But we parted ways, or rather she slowed down to prep for the steep hill and I ran until the base of it before walking up it.

Just before the 17 mile mark, I got “That Call” and for those seasoned Readers of this blog, that can mean only one thing… Awwww POOP! Sure enough. Despite the fact that I had gone BEFORE the race and then made the stop at mile 4.4, I was still getting that “Call of Nature”. I knew the PortaJohn wasn’t too far ahead (with in 0.5 mile) and thought I could make it. I couldn’t.

I scrambled for a secluded part of the woods were I could “commune” with Nature. The advantage to running in rural Tennessee is that you can pretty much do what you need to do without being seen. So, I did what I needed to do… another 4 minutes GONE! But, I was much better and I knew there was that PortaJohn that I could “freshen up” in.

As I was approaching, I could see Susan’s car… sweet! That meant Stroller Pack! As I was approaching there were other people near Susan’s Car. Huh, that sure looked like our van. And there’s two tiny people holding up signs as big as them! And there’s a hot looking oriental woman standing there… sure enough, it’s My Lovely and Talented Wife with The Dynamic Duo with signs and The Elder was in an ASDa shirt!

But as I approached my Mission was clear:

“Susan… Stroller Pack!”

“Uh-oh,” she said going to her vehicle to get it.

I dashed into the PortaJohn and came out minutes later, feeling clean. I stopped to say Hi to everyone and had took some picture of me with The Kids. The Younger must of had one of the PowerCranky gels because he was NOT a happy camper (could have been the wind). The Elder was very enthusiastic holding up the sign.

But, I still had about 9 more miles to go… 3 of which were with a headwind. I know that my Mile 17 Split included both my Nature Commune and the PortaJohn and it was 20 minutes and change. So it really took alot of time just in that mile.

When I came to the Water Station at mile 19ish, I told the guy, “The Only Weather we haven’t had was Thunder and Snow.”

“Oh, they are forecasting that [snow] for tonight.”

Great. I should be finished by then, just 1 more mile and I will be able to get out of the wind and down in the sheltered area. By Mile 20, I was still feeling pretty good, considering everything (i.e. The Wind and other weather phenomenon). At the Aid Station at Mile 21, I was already done with my water bottle and needed a refill, that was the first sign that I was starting to feel the effects. Just after the Aid Station, I saw Susan and she asked where I was and I was just at Mile 21… and I remember still feeling pretty good.

And Mile 22, I caught up with the Runner Chick that I was running with at the beginning of this 2nd Loop. We caught up on the last 5 miles and chatted about the weather. In the span of roughly 1 mile, the blue skies that was letting the Sun beat down on us, clouded up and some cold rain came down. Only to shortly clear up (this happens when the wind can move the clouds around)… well, at least, rain went away, but the clouds stayed.Until about 15 minutes later when the Sun was shining and the Rain came down again from a dark rain cloud in the North.

I can’t remember exactly which mile it was, but we saw an AWESOME Rainbow off in the distance. It was hanging really low in the sky. Actually it appeared to be just North of us, within the hills in the background.

Seeing that a time anywhere NEAR my Terry Anticipated Time of 4:05 was out of the question. Perhaps it was after doing the math in my head realizing I would need a near World Record performance to make up the time and distance. So, I had decided that I was going to hang with this other Runner. We stopped when she needed to stop to walk and we ran when we could. It seemed that we were on the same Pain Page, because whenever she stopped, I was just about to stop. Her husband was running Support Crew for her, so she was able to get some outside motivation.

I could tell that she was getting bummed about her time. Her previous slowest time was 4:24 and when we passed that she made the comment about it. I tried to console her that the marathon that was my worst experience was the one that I learned the most, so there is hope in races that go poorly, if you can look at from a point of view other than “I failed to get my time.”

I got see Susan again… with a different Sign… She made 2 signs with 4 seperate Messages!

So, with the Motivation of NOT coming in over 5 hours, we decided to focus on the finish and head for home. At the Mile 24.7 or so we came out from the balmy, still area out in the wind-exposed colder section of the race course. In the 1st Loop, there was no benefit in the tail wind, it’s as if it had changed directions for those couple miles, just for me. But now on Final Approach, I was getting a tailwind!

The tailwind was nice for all of about 3 steps until the force of the wind was causing me to run faster than I wanted to run or rather than my legs could handle. Soon enough, I saw the Barn, then the sign for Ritter Farms and then the Clock and then… I was finally finished with this marathon.

Despite the miserable Wind Conditions, I felt pretty good about the marathon. I think that even with my “Calls of Nature” I would have a time that I would have been happy with. I came to terms (as something that I learned in a marathon once) with my finishing time as it is. The 4:50 tells a story, it’s just half of my quest to be a Marathon Maniac. Although all of training (and your Guess My Time guesses) suggest that I should have been on the other side of 4 hours… like 4:20ish (with the “Calls of Nature”) but we can never predict the weather conditions 16 weeks out from when we start training.

The marathon was a very good experience but I don’t get to dwell on it very long. I have another one in a few days, and that one is definitely in uncharted territories… so it’s time to Reload, Recharge and Prepare to battle with some Flying Monkeys!

Weekend Update

It’s Monday morning and I running (not literally through – sigh) on 4 hours of sleep. Oh, wait, I fell alseep at my desk, so make that around 4.5hrs of sleep. I am trying to think of what the hell happened that I didn’t get to bed until 3am… Pa-Pa and J-Lo are in town and we took them and The Kids to a Fall Festival at The Younger’s Mother’s Day Out program. We were back and The Kids were asleep pretty early around 8:30 or 9. But what did I really do that required SIX hours?

I don’t remember doing anything terribly time consuming… putting laundry away, loading the dishwasher, paying bills, getting The Elder’s Kindergarten paperwork together, setting up coffee for the morning a few hours later.

But what was it? I dunno. I stayed away from email because that would have just prolonged everything.

Halloween wasn’t very happening at our place this year. We only had a handful of Trick or Treators and The Kids sure didn’t get as much candy as I wanted as they could have. But I am sure I will be thankful for less candy later. It seemed just like last year, oh wait… it was, that they got a ton of candy and one night FOUND some of the candy because there were candy paper carcasses on the floor the next morning.

We are having awesome weather here in Knoxville. The leaves are starting to peak right now. I may have to move Terry Day to a Mountain Run tomorrow and take Stella. Although transforming my Saturday run into a Saturday Walk, may mean that I will need to have some mileage and with the travel time that may not work, but I could get some Awesome pictures.

Now… there is somethine else that is happening tomorrow… what is it? Oh YEAH… The Elder doesn’t have School, this first Tuesday of November!

This Morning Convo

Today is the beginning of the Knox County School’s Fall Break and other daycares, preschools, etc that aren’t associated with the County also follow the County’s School Schedule. So, there was a slight confusion this morning we Our Reliable and Resourceful Au Pair asked me, “Does The Younger have school (his Mother’s Day Out at a local Church) today?” It was clear (on the calendar and well announced to the kids) that there was no school for The Elder’s Kindergarten, but there wasn’t any indication (other than knowing that everything follows the school calendar) that others would share the same fall break.

Au Pair: Does The Younger have school today?

The Elder: (Very Eagerly and loudly) OOH OOH, I know Daddy! I Know the answer!

I bend down to his level and ask, “What is it?”

The Elder: (Matter of factly and softly) No.

It was very funny to see him so animated and excited to share the information and then he proceed to “robot mode” to tell it to me. Not, “No! And we are going to play all day” or “No! The Younger doesn’t have school, just like me.” Just, “No.”

So that got me thinking about routines and schedules and changes. As everyone who has been in an U.S. school system knows, there are TONS of breaks and days off that are built into the school calendar, but the never seem like enough.

Seeing that ALL kids need structure, they need routine. It is so much easier to parent when there is routine, because everyone knows what to expect. Kids, like to know where the boundaries are, so they know what their limits are and they know when they are testing them (because THEY know!). And it’s much easier to parent when there is a routine established. OKay, so I established that routine is a good thing.

So what do Aspergians Kids do when there is a break in routine? They panic a little more, they worry a little more and it might be a trigger of some other (probably unwanted) behavior later on that is unrelated to what is actually happening at the time.

It’s not that Aspergian Kids are that much different when it comes to a break in routine. They do like to try new things or experience new places (sometimes) but they would prefer to be in their routine with their special interest. The AS kid is more like a big ship… they just needs more time to change course.

So, this past week The Elder had a substitute teacher last week prior to this week’s Fall Break. So that may have helped with breaking the whole “going to school everyday” routine since his “school” was already in a state of flux. We found it hilarious the comments that the Substitute left on his daily evaluation sheet… “needs to listen on first command” (in big red ink)

and we are like “Helllllllloooooo, do you know he is autistic? Have you read his IEP and he suppose to learn that by the end of the year?” It’s not a crack on the Sub, since they don’t know that he isn’t NT, but it’s just funny (now) to understand how The Elder’s mind works (and his motive for his actions) in relation to his peers.

The Movie Theatre Amplifies Your Child

In an unpredictable turn of events, the family all congregated at the $4 movie theatre to catch the 4:30 showing of the most recent Pixar-Disney movie WALL-E. This was a great movie, wait, it was an AWESOME movie and not to let loose any spoilers, it’s a great movie for everyone. The Synopsis is: a small, but determined trash compacting robot of the “Wall-E” model (think Sony Cassette Walkman) meets probe “Eve” (think iPod with a laser gun) and embark on an adventure to complete The Directive for all of Humankind.

Wall-E

The Kids throughly enjoyed it and I know that it will be gracing our DVD library soon (maybe as a Christmas gift?).

The audience not only got a laugh from the movie, but from our children. I can’t describe this how it actually came across in the movie theatre, but it’s worth a try.

[The Scene]

Wall-E is trapped in a escape capsule that is about to Self-Destruct. It’s speeding away from the main ship and Eve is desperately trying to chase him but the ship is too fast. It’s a rather tense moment because Wall-E can’t stop the countdown, or the ship, and is panicking.

[Escape Pod's Computer]: FIVE

Wall-E is pushing every button on the console

[Escape Pod's Computer]: FOUR

Eve realizes that he’s going too fast to catch up

[Escape Pod's Computer]: THREE

The screen is of deep dark space as Wall-E’s pod zooms away and everything goes quiet

[Escape Pod's Computer]: TWO

(pause)

GIGANTIC EXPLOSION of Wall-E’s escape pod

(pause)

[The Younger]: ONE!

The Week Wrapup

This week has been topsy-turvy to say the least…

My Lovely and Talented Wife has been sick for most of the week. We took her to the doctor’s on Thursday and walked away with 4 prescriptions. Since this ailment had been around for (what we determined) to be about 2 weeks, the doc covered all the bases, hence the 4 prescriptions. What pushed her into succumbing to going to the doctor was the 8 hours of coughing, oh… make that continuous coughing. Thursday night, she slept sans hacking for quite a while. She was still really tired Friday morning, but that was because her body is playing catch-up (not mustard).

I had been hoping for one more run during the week before Big South Fork, but I didn’t get it. Actually there was a small period of time where I didn’t feel quite right and to avoid actually making it worse, I took it easy. The run was to calm my nerves more than anything else (being so close to race day), so not exposing myself was the smarter thing to do… and I like smart.

So Sunday is my Dennis Birthday. I know 99.9999% of you are thinking – “What the F*&*%&$”. Don’t worry, it’s just my quirkiness in the effort to nickname anything and EVERYTHING. So, with this being my 37th birthday, this is my Dennis Birthday. I’ll have a post for Sunday night (post-Success Sunday) that will explain why it is called “The Dennis Birthday”. If you want to try to sleuth the answer, I will give you a hint: My 33rd birthday was my Rolling Rock Birthday.
