Does Anyone even Come here anymore?

Given that my blogging is as lean as it can get… I shutter just to think of what my numbers of visitors might be… I probably when from 15 to 2. But Never fear, somewhere there is a blog post or even a podcast of my thoughts (now that is ALSO pretty scary).

Things here have been WAYYYYYYY busy. It’s hard to think that June is almost over, but thinking of all that went on… it would need to be over, just about. So… what have I done? Yeah, what HAVE I done?

To start off the month, My Mommy turned 60! And let me tell you… she is aging gracefully! She doesn’t look at day over 42. If I remember correctly, I made some Gluten Free cookies for the kids, for her birthday. NO WAIT! She bought cake for the Dynamic Duo which was Gluten Free from Earthfare. The Elder loves chocolate, which was the flavor of the cake slice (big enough for two to share) and he will eat chocolate and get as excited as I do with Chocolate. However, he will pace himself when it comes to eating chocolate (he gets that from his mother). The Younger, on the other hand, has no self-control with chocolate… and will eat any chocolate that is either not protected by an electrical fence, armed guard or a force-field.

Hence, two days after the cake arrived at the house, it was gone. Mysteriously… I put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and grabbed my magnifying glass and headed to the kitchen. It seemed that whoever had consumed the cake has left clues… yes, CLUES in the form of crumbs. I paced up and down the kitchen alternating stroking my chin and gazing into the air with rubbing my temples and looking at the ground. There had to be some more clues.

I decided to interrogate question the residence of the household. Questioning myself was easy and satisfactory.

Did you eat the cake? No. Are you Sure? Yes. Okay, thanks. You’re Welcome.

How polite I was to myself but the answer had to be elsewhere. I came across The Younger, who is known for his climbing prowlness on to the counters, and asked him a few “easy” questions about that brown streak near his mouth.

Did you eat the cake?” I questioned.

His reply was a simple, “No.”

Well, then, is that dirt on your face?

“No.”

Now, I had to start thinking outside of the box in the questioning… The Force was strong with this one.

So, where you eating poo-poo?” This line of questioning is tough for any male to breakdown from the sheer low-brow approach.

“No,” he chuckled, “I didn’t eat POO-POO!”

So, you were eating cake!” Check…

“Yeah.” Mate.

HEY, THE ELDER…. THE YOUNGER ATE YOUR CAKE!!!” And I made a dash for the front door!

So just a few days later in June… The Lovely and Talented Wife earned one more mark toward sainthood with another year of marriage in the books. 13 if you are playing from home. And right on our anniversary we had a visit from my Grandma Boots and Cousin Bobbie-Jo. They are from my biological dad’s side (who had MS and passed in 2006). Not to be confused with Grandma Higgins who is the Mommy to my Step-Dad Pete, who you see commenting around here from time to time. He’s going to be 60 this year… and he doesn’t look a day over 144.

So, it was great for them to see the kids and eat dinner and all that funstuff while they were here. We signed up Bobbie-Jo on Facebook, which was way fun. Jen cut her hair, or at least fixed her hair. I think my hair might be technically longer, I dunno. There’s a picture on FB.

Then, there was a crazy week when NOTHING in my schedule was staying to the plan. I am not sure what happened… some planet was probably in Retrograde or something. Who knows. But then last week… which may have been that crazy week (because I lost track) was getting ready for the

Tellico Sprint Triathlon which was to benefit ASD Athletes.

Speaking of ASD Athletes… we had a request from the IRS for more information. They received in on the 15th of this month, so HOPEFULLY, we’ll know around July 1, if we are 501(c)(3) or not… which we will be! So, the Triathlon was an experience… a good experience and we are going to be the beneficiaries NEXT year as well! I’ll probably do the Triathlon story in a different post.

But NOW, ASD Athletes is about to submit a Grant Request for $20,000 for our certification program that we want to start! That’s technically what I should be doing “now”, but I didn’t want this blog post to be looming on my mind while the last part of the grant is being worked out.

I am not sure if I have even ran this month. I still need to send in my entry form for the Niagra Falls International Marathon as well as make up a plan for it as well. I do have the pictures developed from the Flying Pig Marathon and can post those soon.

WORLD Autism Day

It’s WORLD Autism Day! It’s when the people on this globe bring awareness to Autism and the Autism Spectrum Disorders (huh, kinda sounds like a great name for a band…) But it’s only one day for some people. Just Like World Aids Day is just one day, for some. For me and my family, World Autism Day is EVERYDAY. It is our world.

Thankfully, my social and communication deficiencies from my Asperger’s Syndrome have made me (as a fellow Aspergian John Robison quoted) “Pleasantly Eccentric”. But that’s not the case for some. Some, are a little more in need. Need of therapy, need of companionship, need of understanding, need of being heard, need of advocacy. So today is a day to stop and as I have named my personal Soap Box Campaign… let’s just make it for the ENTIRE YEAR! “FOCUS ON KNOWLEDGE”

Focus on Knowledge

Growing up, it was all about learning. And not just what you learned in school. Schoolhouse Rocky (a Saturday Morning cartoon for Gen Xers) tagline was ‘Knowledge is Power’ or the cartoon of GI JOE “Knowing is Half the Battle”. Unfortunately Autistics can’t always SEE the big picture and know that there is another half. So this year, it’s going to be FOCUS ON KNOWLEDGE and I hope to have things that Neurotypical (NT) Person can learn about Autism and so things that Autistics can learn about NTs.

One of the things that I passionate and dedicated to do is bring the world of athletics to Autistics. It’s not that all of them are going to be great at athletics or physical activity, but they should be exposed to them. It’s a healthy lifestyle that EVERYONE should engage. That’s why I created ASD Athletes! And My Lovely and Talented Wife is passionate about Autism Advocacy as well! However, there is no way that My Lovely and Talented Wife and I can do this alone… we need your help. We need it physically (by volunteering at our events), we need it oratatively (spead the cause by Word-Of-Mouth), we need it spiritually (pray for our success) and we need it financially (because that’s the world we live in).

And since this is my blog about running… and since I am on the Spectrum (Asperger’s Syndrome) myself… I am compelled to merge the two for a Running Themed Donation Campaign. Here’s the deal, go over to the ASD Athletes’ website and click on the Chip-IN Thermometer on the right hand side (opposite side of where you Pass the Dutchie).

Be an ASD Athletes Half-Marathoner by donating $13.10

Be an ASD Athletes Marathoner by donating $26.20

Be an ASD Ultra Marathon by donating something more than $26.20

Or

Be an ASD Athletes Plantinum Donor (since that one well known race is trademarked) by donating $140.60

Caution: Donating to a worthy cause may cause an experience of exuberance and a feeling of generosity and/or kindness. Should you experience any of these, please volunteer in your community. Like a smile, generosity can spread like wildfire (donors and recipients beware!) and even indirect contact can cause it spread. Large donations or repeat giving can instill a culture causing Random Acts of Kindness or even cultivation of Values.

And if you don’t get to Donate on World Autism Day, it’s okay… I will FORGIVE you! Promise!Look Sir! Donations!

Terry Higgins and AIDS

I just had a trifecta happen and so I thought I would blog about it before I got the (Flying) Monkey (Marathon Race Report) Off My Back.

Component #1 WORLD AIDS DAY. December 1st is known as World AIDS Day. I just read an email from Starbucks Coffee that detailed the Worlds AIDS Day support/awareness that the coffee stores were going to do. So, that got the ball rolling.

Component #2 PROJECT (RED). For my personal accomplishment of completing 2 marathons back to back and the fact that my used iPod 2G Nano died, I thought I would reward myself with a brand new iPod. I thought, why not get an iPod Shuffle… they are small and I don’t need something huge. So I bought an iPod Shuffle on Black Friday. There was Free Shipping and looking around, there was something about an exclusive (RED) iPod shuffle ONLY at the Apple Store. So I thought, I have NO idea what this “RED” thing is but if it is exclusive, then COOL. I’ll do it! Well, last night the iPod arrived and i discovered that (RED) is a project to eliminate AIDS in Africa. I wonder if they know it’s Christmastime at all?

Component #3 TERRY HIGGINS. In 2004, I Googled myself for fun. Sometimes I would Google myself twice or even three times a day 😉 and each time, the first reference to me, Terry Higgins of Planet3rry Fame was on page 3 or 4 and that was my resume that I had with the University of Tennessee Statistics Department Website. The very FIRST reference was for Terrence (Terry) Higgins, the one of the very first cases of someone dying from AIDS in England.

So, ME (Terry Higgins) getting an iPod Shuffle to benefit an AIDS charity on World AIDS Day…

[ed. Now, if you google ‘Terry Higgins’ I am FOURTH on the first page, right after Terrence Higgins, a Saxophone player in Chicago area, and a sex kitten glamour girl from the 60s. Figures the chick with big rack would be the #1 result]

My Jail Time

So at the end of September, I got a call asking me if I would participate in the MDA Lock Up Fund raising. Basically you agree to raise “your bail” amount and then go out and collect it. Now, I am not much a Fund raising type of person… it doesn’t help that the Asperger’s makes social interactions that more difficult. I don’t always know if someone is doing to really help me or to get rid of me or both (I guess).

I pretty much can’t say “No” when it comes to charity. I mean, if I have it, I’ll give it. I think it goes to the “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”. One of the charities that I am a fan of is Pay It Forward, which is a similar concept and my wife’s company has a Go-Give mantra that is a foundation of their philosophy.

So, I said “Sure”, that was End of September. All through October, I knew that it was there, but it wasn’t a high priority. I had The Elder’s IEP meeting, Fall Break, in Laws, Pa-Pa and J-lo coming to town and, oh yeah… training for 2 marathons. So, it wasn’t until the anxiety level got really high that it finally floated up to the top of my “To-Do” list. And so I set the online stuff out and sent out emails. It was short notice, I know, but I knew that.

So, Wednesday morning, an unmarked police car came to my work and a police office (actually a police cadet) came and served me the “warrant” for my arrest. Of course, my coworkers were a little funny as they made jokes about trying to break me out… gee thanks! Put that file in the middle of the cake I could hear the Keystone Kops playing in the background.

So, I sat in the back while we went to the restaurant jail house. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a cage in back of the cruiser. I could have rapped some NWA songs or maybe some Snow as ambiance of riding in the back of car.

When we got there, everyone was happy to see me, I was one of the first “jail birds” there. I was ushered to the back table court room where some guy The Judge sentenced me to wearing a straight-jacket stripped covering to take a picture. Now, I knew something was up that I had to walk behind the bars to “get into jail”. I was thinking that this was going to be an easy get away… none of these people looked like runners and I was in marathon training, so… come and on crash me! So, i got my mug shot and the judge sentenced me with the bang of his rubber mallet gavel and I was free to go. They asked me for bribes to set me free in the form of the donations that I had collected – extortion I tell you!

Now, I wasn’t done though… they had cell phones there as to call people to get even MORE money. So, what I did was looked through my phone and see who I hadn’t talked to in a while and then used their phone to call then. Workin’ the system. Now the first person that I called I was a little “off” and didn’t “sell” my predicament very well. However, by the time that I called my Brother Junior Johnson aka the Absolutely Fabulous Uncle Chris, it went down something like this:
(kinda whispering) “Hey Chris, this is Terry, I am in jail, I need some bail money”

“Oh really? Are you at a place where I can wire it?” Isn’t that awesome that one of my family members didn’t think twice about sending me bail? That’s awesome. Of course I would do the same thing… (And now I know the FIRST person I am going to call if I ever get booked by the 5-0 ;-P )

So, I called a few more people and managed to get some more money, but more importantly, talk to a few people that I don’t always get to talk to! I was probably there about an hour and the police cadet took me back to work. And yes I took pictures of my whole ordeal. And YES LADIES, I did get a picture of the cadet in his uniform because I know how you ladies love your uniforms… STOP LICKING THE MONITORS!

So all in all, I was to raise $1300

And looking at my site today… DAMMMNNNNNNN… you guys are awesome. I was at $235 yesterday morning and now it’s $345! SAH-WEET-TAH plus the $65 that I made from calling yesterday, that’s $410!

Awesome!

From Terry Goes to Jail

The Pokey

It’s not going to be like Shawshank Redemption, or at least I hope not! But this morning in about 5 minutes, I am going to get taken to The Butcher Shop and serve some time in JAIL.

You can help BAIL me out… at https://www.joinmda.org/ut08/tahiggins/ if you want to… I’m too pretty to behind bars! I look so much better in plaid then I do in stripes!

Thanks to those who have already contributed to the MDA Lock-Up Fundraiser My Bail!

Hey LADIES!

Step to the rhythm, step to the ride

If breasts aren’t being used to sell something… the color pink is reminding us to help erradicate breast cancer. Just for the record, I am breast supporter… yes, I am pro-boob. Well, the following came across my “Deal” Feed. It’s a way that you can get your mammogram and get a little pampering afterwards. From what I understand the mammogram machine does NOT have the best bedside manner and does a lot of “squishing” (more than a guy on prom night). So, here is a way to get that “womanly” exam and a little pampering. Oh, it is a Marketing Ploy, so you might have to buy do something to get it:

ASDathletes

I have started a new charity, it’s called Autistic Spectrum Disorder Athletes or ASDathletes for short. For a number of years I have wanted to start my own charity/foundation but wasn’t sure what the charity would be about or who it would help.

With the changes over the past year in my household, things just fell into place and PRESTO! ASDathletes was created. Right now, ASDathletes is not a not-for-profit chartable (YET), but I will be getting the paperwork in place to make it a 501(c)(3) organization, this will mean if you decide to donate to ASDathletes, you receive tax deduction benefits, I’ll make an announcement when that happens.

I am very excited about this, but also very scared.

The “working” mission statement is to help those under the umbrella of autism enjoy athletics.

Lets face it, Autism can be pretty expensive: Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Special Diets, etc. Participating in sports is often overlooked or not even considered because of the cost associated with sports. Soccer was an important part of my life and I see now the therapeutic benefits of playing soccer both social and physical. So I have created this charity to help support those who want to participate in sports and help mediate the cost. Who knows, maybe one day, I’ll be sponsoring an Autistic Olympian. It sure would be nice to have a business trip to London in 2012!!!

The website for the charity is www.asdathletes.org
