FORTY

Psalm 40
 1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
   out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.

The 40 Milestone has arrived. I’m now officially a “Masters” runner, which is just an euphemism for “statistically slower runner” but even in this new age group, it’s not the most difficult (30-34 group is very tough) but it has enough “still fast” elite to fill the top spots. I’m thinking that I will keep an overall Personal Result (PR) time with denoting Masters or not.

Looks like the first race of my newly entered age division will be the CrossKnox 10 miler on Sunday Oct 16th. I haven’t worked a race since July 3rd and it’s been even longer since I ran one. I’m signed up for a pre-race volunteer spot! I need to make up the 3 that I lost this spring due to the flooding of my Civic and by a flesh wound I received at the Strawplains Marathon, during registration! Freaky! That’s like $15 of race fees that I have lost or have succumbbed to natural disasters.

I haven’t ran this race either… so it’s new to me. It’s a point-to-point 10 miler, which is highly unusual for this area. The idea of the run is to showcase the Knoxville Greenways as almost all of the course is run on them. The other thing that is different is that it is a Sunday afternoon race, we have so few races that aren’t Saturday morning. I just have to juggle the Church schedule to make sure I can get to where I need to be. Since it is point-to-point transportation is provided.

So “Welcome Forty“… I might just have to drink one in Recognition.

90 Years and 1200 Miles

For the sake of National Security parts of this blog post have been CLASSIFIED

Over the past few days, starting sometime in the afternoon of Thursday Past, the Family and I began a trip to Richmond Virginia to attend the 90th Birthday party of my Grandmother, Grandma Higgins, my Step-Dad’s Maternal Parental Unit. As far as I know, so that means, as far as I am telling you… she is the oldest living relative that I have. Well, there might be some In-Laws over in the Phillipines from My Lovely and Talented Wife’s family. You know those Pacific Rim peoples… eating rice and drinking Green Tea and living to 300 years old.

So, let me put in the disclaimer that Grandma Higgins is the oldest living relative (yet to be confirmed) in addition to be the oldest caucasion relative (pretty sure on this one) that is in my family.

The Big 9-0! Just like 38, just comes once a lifetime… but way more cooler than 38. However, when you reach the 90th, you don’t always have the greatest desire to drink shots, or go out Go-Go dancing or anything like that… leave that up to the young whipper-snappers… what’s WRONG with the youth today???

So the party for Gma H. was to have dinner Saturday Night and then Cake and Ice Cream back at her place. All of her Children came to see her, 4 boys, from basically the 4 corners of the US came to attendance, plus some of my Stepdad’s cousins, but for me to figure how they are related to her, would give me a headache. They would be… for me… Great Cousins? well, they are GREAT cousins… and they live in Tennessee, just a few miles to the West of us!

As part of our trip to Virigini, we decided to also head [CLASSIFIED] and to [CLASSIFIED] so that [CLASSIFIED] and [CLASSIFIED] could [CLASSIFIED] with [CLASSIFIED] [CLASSIFIED]. We also wanted to [CLASSIFIED] while we were at [CLASSIFIED] so that [CLASSIFIED] would have no idea that [CLASSIFIED] had [CLASSIFIED] [CLASSIFIED]. During our trip there, we stopped at a food eating establishment and just before we going to order, the power went out. And the power went out for the entire area… NOTHING. The only lights anywhere for as we could see was dark. Even the Golden [CLASSIFIED] of [McCLASSIED] was dark, so being hungry, we kept going, except that was one of the last places to stop before getting to [CLASSIFIED] which was still [CLASSIFIED] miles away. Anyway, we made it [CLASSIFIED] safely. I did take some [CLASSIFIED] but I will have to keep them [CLASSIFIED] until I get the green light from [CLASSIFIED] to un[CLASSIFIED] them. Wow… using [CLASSIFIED] really makes it faster to blog. I should [CLASSIFIED] more [CLASSIFIED] often!

I had wanted to go visit a friend that was in somewhat close proximity to [CLASSIFIED] but I ended up losing my phone while taking some pictures of the kids while outside. So it was a phone hunt to try to find my phone. but as usual, I found my phone in the last place I looked. That put us late leaving to get to Grandma’s Party we had to change our plans completely and ended up having to not see [CLASSIFIED]and [CLASSIFIED] or you can call them [CLASSIFIED] since they are joined at the hip.

We also left late enough that we were going to miss dinner, but we had called our Party ahead of time, so they were going to order and bring food to us. Which they did… and it was awesome. After getting to the hotel, showered, dressed, feed and ready to go, we were made our way down the road to Grandmother’s House… there were a few hills, but no real “woods”.

Not to drag this post out for another day in Draft mode, we had a great time at the party. The Kids were particularly hyper for the most part, but they had fun while they were there. They got to meet all of their Great Uncles, one of the wives… their great-GREAT cousins… and of course, their Great Grandmother who turned 90. Grandma’s party was rockin’ pretty late. It was after 9 or 10 before we left and the kids were on the decline… The next morning, I was going to see some friends who live in Richmond, but given the time for breakfast and packing the van, and visiting, and their schedules… it just didn’t happen. We made our way back to Tennessee late Sunday night and ready to make the best of the week coming up!

Kids Birthday Parties are

I get a nice 9 break from work but I will be travel to Phoenix AZ for MK Leadership with My Lovely and Talented Wife. So, we have given our Resourseful and Reliable Au Pair (although she’s not technically an au pair anymore… will have to think of a new name) the weekend off. I had expected to be able to get in a long run on Saturday Morning… forget that it was around 10F outside, I need to get on the ball with the Marathon training if I am going to be a Pacer (still no official word).

Saturday morning I figured out (i.e. was told) that she had the day off… and that for the immediate term, I had to go make breakfast. My Lovely and Talented Wife requested Peanut Butter Chip Pancakes… so off to make the Pancakes. I was a little bummed about not being able to get my run in, but it was my fault for not creating a schedule and seeing how it would match up with everyone else’s.

At some point during the day, I thought to myself… HEY, I could run home from the birthday party this afternoon. BRILLIANT! “Hey Honey, Can I run home after the party?”

“Sure…”

*fist pump* “Sweet”

The party was one The Elder’s friends from his “School when I was 4″. This was a classroom of other Asperger and PDD children who had qualified for services from Knox County. It was a Godsend! But, this year, the kids in that class when seperate ways. The Birthday Boy and The Elder are in the same school, but are in different circulums. The Birthday Party was a homecoming of sorts… all but one kid was there…

Birthday parties with kids on the Autism Spectrum are the best… you never know what you are going to get and what you have is going to change in 5 minutes. This makes taking pictures LOADS of fun. I have a ton of pictures to download from Stella and upload. It’s just working in the time to get that done… I still have to pack and stuff.

And so I ran home from the birthday party… I still have to map out the distance, but it was a decent run, despite been cold. Although 32F was MUCH warmer than what it was that morning… so I am not complain. Oh, did I mention that The Birthday Boy’s Dad can run a 2:28 marathon?

It's Her Birthday Too!

Birthday Girl

She's 74 now...

Yes Ms. Bardot and I share a birthday, but she has a few years on me. Surprising this year, I was not really anticipating my birthday all that much so when I woke up, I wasn’t all giddy or anything like that. Even later in the day, it was still like another Sunday. I guess because it’s one of the mid-year birthdays “37″ when not a whole lot happens or is associated with the number.

I got a bunch of cards made by The Younger, a rain check on some camping stuff from My Lovely and Talented Wife and The Kids. Our Reliable and Resourceful Au Pair gave me a basket of Chocolate Candy and Smarties – YUM! A couple of cards in the mail, a number of well-wishing emails and a French Press and gift certificate to a local coffee shop.

I wasn’t on a computer for the weekend, so I need to make the donation to the NMSS in memory of my biological father (as opposed to my dad aka Pa-Pa for new readers) who passed away in 2006 due to complications resulting from Multiple Scelrosis.

The Week Wrapup

This week has been topsy-turvy to say the least…

My Lovely and Talented Wife has been sick for most of the week. We took her to the doctor’s on Thursday and walked away with 4 prescriptions. Since this ailment had been around for (what we determined) to be about 2 weeks, the doc covered all the bases, hence the 4 prescriptions. What pushed her into succumbing to going to the doctor was the 8 hours of coughing, oh… make that continuous coughing. Thursday night, she slept sans hacking for quite a while. She was still really tired Friday morning, but that was because her body is playing catch-up (not mustard).

I had been hoping for one more run during the week before Big South Fork, but I didn’t get it. Actually there was a small period of time where I didn’t feel quite right and to avoid actually making it worse, I took it easy. The run was to calm my nerves more than anything else (being so close to race day), so not exposing myself was the smarter thing to do… and I like smart.

So Sunday is my Dennis Birthday. I know 99.9999% of you are thinking – “What the F*&*%&$”. Don’t worry, it’s just my quirkiness in the effort to nickname anything and EVERYTHING. So, with this being my 37th birthday, this is my Dennis Birthday. I’ll have a post for Sunday night (post-Success Sunday) that will explain why it is called “The Dennis Birthday”. If you want to try to sleuth the answer, I will give you a hint: My 33rd birthday was my Rolling Rock Birthday.

He’s cleaned up pretty well, considering.

Weekend

Can anyone tell me where they put the weekend? I can't remember what happened to it.

Friday after work I stopped by BB&T where I signed up for a Home Equity Loan with no closing costs, this way I have access to a buy of MONEY, if we need it for emergency. The nice thing is, and the reason that I signed up now, that I am locked into the prime rate. So with the dark clouds of higher interest rates on the horizon, now was a good time.

I am totally blanking on what I did Friday night, must be getting old.

Saturday, I had an eye appointment in the morning, which my eyes are none for the worse. My prescription for glasses is unchanged from last time. All I have is a slight astigmatism, which the glasses I have now really only make objects “crisper' looking. For Example, the edges of lettering on street signs is more pronounced. Maybe I'll have to take a snappy snappy of me with specs on… one to think about. Jen had an appointment that afternoon. So Eric and I hung out at the house waiting for Greg and Jessica Burrell to arrive from the metropolis of Elijay, Ga. Greg is taking a class in Harrogate, Tn (about an hour away) and came up to Knoxville for Jen's belated birthday party with his wife. Greg and Jessica were married one week after us, so it is really easy to remember their anniversary. One they got here we went to Marty & Solange's house for the party. Solange's Birthday is one day after Jen's and so we have a combined soiree usually at our house with live music from Jammin' Bread and Marty's delectable potent brew. The party turned out to be a low key affair while we were there. Eric on the other hand had an eventful evening to say the least. After about 10 minutes, Eric found the kid's room upstair and was playing with the cars that were up there. He absolutely loves mathbox cars right now. He has about 4 at home, but his friends have bunches and bunches, so he is like a kid in the candy store. Anyway, the scary part of evening was were, we witnessed, David (22 months) pushed Eric down the stairs. Yep, one shove and Eric went tumbling. Jen and I both witness the event and comment later that our feet were in cement and time stayed still. Luckily, Eric fell in such a manner that his neck was put in a compromising position and after his first “roll” his slid more on his back that anything else. Pretty scary but probably the first of many times that Eric is involved in something that scares the Ba-Geesus out of us. At least we could see what happened and not arrive on the scene not knowing the extent of the damages. Eric had fun for rest of the evening, so that was fine.

Oh, another thing that Eric did on Saturday, two as a matter of fact. One, he had been drawing on a big sketch book, but had only been making single lines. Well, Jen showed him how to make a circle and sure enough, he was making ovals. Lots and Lots of ovals. The only thing about Eric is that he thinks his legs are also part of the sketch pad!

The other thing that he did was play cars on a mat. It was one of those kid's maps that has a map of a city as th design, so that you can drive your cars around on it. Well, Eric was driving his cars around the mat as Jen watched him. I don't know if committed any moving violations, but the cognitive reasoning to keep the car on the map and on the streets was a new step for him.

Sunday, we went to church. I worked on Jen's newsletter for a while, then off to the Math Lab to get some hours. I had one student right at the very end, but rather uneventful. I should have updated last night and not a million times today.

Running Update: No running over the weekend. I had wanted to run on the treadmill while Eric was sleeping but had other things to due. I am going swimming today though!

1066: The Norman conquest of England begins, as an army led by William the Conqueror lands at Pevensey, England. William will be crowned king of England by the year’s end.

My birthday is here. Woo Hoo! (I think). I appreciate all the birthday and ecards that I have gotten, thank you!

If you noticed, there are NEW pictures of Eric online! Finally! YAY! It took me most of the evening, but I got them up. The boppy picture for September will be up this week. I am hoping to have Best of Boppy up within the next few days. I blew off running last night, in lieu of uploading the pictures. Important things first!

4 inches

Another fine day here in the East Tennessee Area. The weather will be slightly cloudy with a slight breeze as the temperature is a delightful 75 degrees. Ah, Spring is in the air.

That was NOT the case this Sunday in Abington, Virginia! Ha! There was 4 inches of snow, the wet sticky kind, where you can build giant snowmen! Mother Nature was having a little fun for the Virginia Creeper Marathon this past Sunday. I hope to have some good pictures of the conditions of the race in my marathon review, when I get it put up on the website.

Jen P’s birthday was on Saturday and for her birthday we went to the ARCOTS conference in Johnson City, TN. This conference was for the teaching of statistics at the college level and included different ways to explain concepts and ideas using tradition and innovative techniques. Although the speakers were very good they were not given enough time for their presentations and so there was a lot of information left out. Hopefully that will be changed in the future.

School is going well. This past week has been fairly calm. But I have to gear up because this Friday, my 251 class is having a test and then next Thursday my 201 class is having their test. So mega-grading. I will still have my own homework to do up until exam time. This definitely was the hardest semester. YIKES!

Anyway, I have to run to get some more school work done. I am feeling the baby kick much more often and I can even see him kick every once and a while.
