Camera Help

StellaI’ve had Stella for about a year now and would really like to give her an upgrade, not only to increase her output but also her functionality. I have been using her straight out of the box with the equipment that she has had, but now I want to make her bigger and better. Kind like give her a technological face lift or boob job but with all the cutting and saline implants.

Jewelry

LensRight now, Stella comes with the Kit Lens (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens) which a general use lens, nothing too great, nothing too bad. But I am limited in my ability to take upclose/macro pictures as well as distant pictures. Typically, the most you pay for a lens the better the lens. It might be lens quality (material, etc) or performance (such as a macro lens or a huge mofo lens like you see at sporting games). Some lens require very less light to take a great picture, or some have great Zooooooom.

I have heard good things about the Sigma 18-200mm lens as a pretty functional lens that I could use without having to switch lens often.

SpeedlightThere are lots of different flashes out there… some that are handheld that fire remotely. Or others that are in shiny umbrellas like at portrait places, but I was thinking about a mounting flash. I read that Speedlite is the most recognized brand, but I don’t know if that is the best that’s out there and what type of features I would need/want

Fashion Accessories

FilterFilters: Not sure which filters would be th best for me to get, because I want to protect the lens plus enhance the light. I know that different filters do different things, but for an all around filter do I want a UV Haze filter or a polarized filter or what?Hood

Lens Hood: I know that I need one. They are used to block light coming in from the side of the lens, this means that the light from the object being photographed has more input into the picture. My Canon AV-1 (35mm) has a collapsable rubber hood, but thought I would check to see.

So what recommendations do you out there on the internet have for me to save up my “nickies and pennles”?

Running with Albert

HEY HEY HEY! I received my marathon pictures in the ole email box the other day and thought that I would let you have a look see:

I thought that it was really cool that I started the race with a slightly overweight Einstein. I thought he was dead, but that’s just a theory I guess.

Ever wonder how great action shots of athletes in motion are taken? Here is a link that I found from the superb Photography Website STROBIST

Returned

We returned safety back to Big Orange Country without incident. The trip was a lot of fun but yet exhausting. Of course, now I am very far behind on everything, both work and personal stuff, so it will take a couple of days to get back on an even keel.

I took over 300+ pictures, most of them are stuff that probably wouldn’t interest you all. They are from Seminar, but if I find one that seems to have some merit, I will upload it here or on Flickr. The Dallas Convention Center is located adjacent to a small cemetery and I took a few pictures. I am playing with colors right now and will post them today to Flickr. Most head and foot stones were either broken, missing or too worn to read.

Having Stella (my Camera) this trip was 1000 times better than having my 35mm Canon AV-1 and 2 Point and Shoot Cameras from past years. I was able to learn more of the manual features as I had to battle with Distance and Low Light (or poor lighting) all Seminar. I did run out of space on the CF card and will need to pick up a few more gigs.

So Coming Up… we have posts such as:

And then… the bottom fell out

Wow… do I have some good blog stuff for you all. Man, I want to do it justice, but to come up something eloquent that you can have a chuckle over over a nice glass of wine might take forever. I might have to give you the Bud Light edition. No wait, Bud Light sucks… water has more flavor. Let’s go with something like the Rolling Rock edition… nice American Pale Ale in a green bottle brought to you by the number “33″.

So, let’s get in the Way Back Machine and travel back to Friday. Ahhh, Friday. I had been beating myself over my paces on Thursday’s run and wondering why I wasn’t all that excited about them, but then I realized although the paces weren’t that exciting but they were 1) More consistent during the middle miles and 2) Spot On my current Long Run pace. So as much as I wanted to bitch and moan about them… they weren’t that bad.

I debated on whether to workout on Friday to give my legs a rest, but common sense came away victorious and ruled that since it “was a day I was breathing, it was a day to be exercising”. So, I went for the Friday Special, it’s a 2-fer. The Brick workout. 411 meters in the pool and I was out in the open oppressive hot sun wondering how soon it would be before I could run no further because the soles of my shoes would be permanently stuck to the sidewalk. Buzzards were already starting to circle over me, I think the birds provided just enough shade to keep the soles cool.

I made a in-run strategy to bail on the 2.18 mile course and settle for the 1.58 mile course as I didn’t want to kill myself since I was feeling the effects of Thursday’s run.

So Friday night was date night with My Lovely and Talented Wife and we traveled down to Maryville (pronounced: Mur-vul) to a Thai place called Lemongrass. MMMM MMMM. We had this sushi that had crunchy tuna (don’t ask… we didn’t) and it was really good. After that we enjoyed a nice date night with doing stuff from the pre-kid era such as going to Wal-mart and perusing Staples.

Funny aside: That Backpack post from yesterday was spawned from the trip to Staples (the Case-It Bag) but that email was supposed to go to my gmail account, but instead was sent to my secret email account that sends the message to the blog. Imagine my surprise when I see comment for the Message “BackPacks”… I never wrote any blog post called Backpacks… oh…

Saturday was not very eventful. Well, except that The Younger lost The Elder’s glasses… *sigh* that’s a couple hundred dollar right there. My Eye insurance SUCKS and we have to get the Flexon glasses that is made from some NASA material they probably use on the Space Shuttle. No, not the foam… a metal. Seriously, this stuff can withstand the abuse of a 2yo and 4yo, so anything Space Use related is nothing compared to the destructive power of The Elder and The Younger. But Flexon = $$$.

Now, you can ask The Younger, “where are brother’s glasses” and he’ll say “mommy’s room” but they are no where to be seen or found.

Sunday had an excitement of it’s own… Birthday Pictures! There are two types of photographers… ones that can work with people and the other that work with still life. I would classify Models as still life mainly because they are posing and although may have some high-faluted opinion of themselves, if they don’t get the picture they don’t get work, if they don’t get work they can’t eat and if they can’t eat they’ll waste away… wait, if they can’t get paid they can’t buy vodka and cigarettes. They are typically not working with crazy kids who don’t want to sit still or stay in the room for two seconds or adults trying to get their kids to sit still for one second at the least. Our photographer would be the latter, the still life type. She even had that “I’m an artsy type of photographer” look to her with her dyed red hair and black velvet Goth wannabe pants. No, there is nothing wrong with that at all, but you might want to evaluate working in a national chain photography store. Or get some kids of your own, then you’ll “know”.

Now as a stranger to kids, your first impression can either give you supreme authoritarian power (i.e. Darth Vader) or lay down the “walk all over me” mat. Guess which card she played. Right…

So, as we are in the middle of struggling to get poses taken where it looks like we are not anchoring our kids to our laps, the camera… a Fuji FinePix (don’t know the model) decides that it’s not going to work. Well, it’s not going to focus on auto-focus. I was so close to saying, “can’t you drive stick?” Not referencing her automotive persuasion but her ability to twist the round knobby thing that pokes out like a big honkin’ nose off the face of the camera… most people call it a “lens”. But alas, the camera gods smiled and all was well with the camera. Except the kids, now having a nice break have gone from almost being in a picture taking mood to NOT being in a picture taking mood.

A couple of forced poses and we finally have a bunch of pictures to choose from… YAY! Well, we would except that the proprietary software the company uses has locked the one free computer. This requires a call to company tech support. *sigh* more waiting. and waiting… and finally, we see the pictures. This should be the quick part, just say “no” to all, tell her she sucks at her job, leave a stinky diaper in the play area, spill our contraband iced tea and say “I would rather poke sharp sticks in my eye than have pictures taken here!!!” (which is the Wife’s and I fave saying next to “I’d rather eat shards of glass than eat here!”) .

Of course this place is the best place in the area to get pictures taken than the super high priced photographers (I wanna be one) where you take a picture of the first born and leave the kid there as a down payment on the amount due. I mean, there is JC Penney’s and Sears but those places are “I would rather poke sharp sticks in my eye and set myself on fire than have pictures taken here.”

But you know what… Goth Girl deliver some goods. She was able to get enough good pictures of the poses to make the session worthwhile. She actually got a great up close picture of The Younger, which turned out great. So, all was not lost. But note to self, ask for Michael next time.

So… that’s the skinny through Sunday… but there is more to come… such as “The bottom sinks lower” or “Thar be a hook in yer foot” or “Did some order a Birthday Monsoon?” or “Two more mouths to feed?” or “Hey, when did it hot in here?”

Womanly Questions

I received a comment from She Who Shall Not Be Linked asking what my freakin’ problem was with Flickr and how ignorant could I be. OKay, maybe that’s a little too dramatic, but she didn’t understand my question, so I emailed her and tried (horribly I am sure) to describe the difference between using Flickr as a webalbum tool and Picasa.

Picasa is webalbum software, so it’s made for this type of stuff and is what I am using for the family photo album. It’s incredibly easy to upload to webalbums from the Picasa (Google) software… SO very easy. The interface to navigate within the album is more intuitive (big arrows above the pictures) as opposed to Flickr (click on the next picture as the arrows scroll through the thumbnail set).

Flickr is pretty easy because it has a Windows Interface called Uploadr which allows you to bulk upload files and if you do it right and have a “pro” account you can essential make “sets” as webalbums right from Windows Explorer. I am sure that Linux and Apple have similar type programs but I don’t have alot of experience with either, so there I am truly ignorant. Now someone created a Hack for Picasa and you can add the option to upload from Picasa to Flickr. So with this little toy, I could send stuff to Picasa (The Family Album) and to Flickr (if I upgrade to the Pro account) right from my computer from one location… Hmmmm.

Picasa is free, but Flickr has a $24.95 price to it, so I have to wrestle with laying down the cash for the upgrade when, after looking at my Fourth of July pictures, I need (and I really NEED) a new lens or at least a lens hood for my existing lens.

Digital Camera Artice

Thanks to David-In-Law, for brining this article to my attention. He said that I would be interested and I am interested! Enough that I think it is very important for people to know. And so did a lot of other people by means of the DIGG number!

Digital Cameras: The Top 10 Things You Need to Know [ed. Link Fixed, Thanks Greg!]

Here are my comments:

1)Yeah, and this will drive the price!

2)Digital Zoom=Crap

3)Even American Samoa had AA for a reasonable price!

4)Amen, Brother!

5)But some other companies make good cameras too

6)Easy to use, from picture taking to printing (with the right bundle)

7)Not only will they break, but broken cameras sell on eBay

8)With Memory Prices these days, multiple cards is a No-Brainer!

9)Picasa with webalbums is your one stop: photo archive, minor alterations, web album producer, Flikr uploader…

10) Digital Photo Frames are HOT right now! This way you don’t have to chose with picture to use. Just make sure no boudoir pictures are uploaded (unless you are an exhibitionist… RAOW!)

Yesterday transformed

It was pretty interesting that just writing a post yesterday was enough for me to go from “bleh” to “hurray”! Okay, it wasn’t quite a “hurray” but pretty close.

So after I left worked, I made my way to Fort Kid where I met My Lovely and Talented Wife and the kids. We had dropped off Cris (our Au Pair) off at a high school downtown to get her started with her English classes. To pass the time, the kids went to Fort Kid which is massive playground area and I met them there. This means that the normal Bedtime Routine was going to be out of alignment, not a real problem.

After the kids were home and finally went to sleep, which happened faster than normal because they had played hard and it was later than normal, I went on to the computer to work with the finances and get the bills paid. While I was working on the computer, My Lovely and Talented Wife and Cris made S’mores on the (gas) stove.

Cris had never had S’mores before, but had seen them on the movies. S’mores, for those of you who are not familiar, are marshmellows that have been toasted typically over an open fire (traditionally over a camp fire) source, and is sandwiched with a chunk of chocolate and sandwiched between two graham crackers.

Since I was working on the computer, I didn’t join them, but somehow a S’more was delivered to me, twice! YAY for me. Although I wasn’t able to get everything done on the computer, I was able to have a happy belly!

I am reading a book that I think is called something to the effect of Organic Cleaning and I don’t even know who the reader is, but she is incredibly sarcastic and therefore, funny. One thing that stuck with me as read the book in bed, was that “uncluttered space is more valuable that cluttered space.” [Insert Keanu Reeves saying, "WOOOOAH"] So I am in the process of making my house priceless. I will post the book information in the next few days.

My workout schedule for today was on a short schedule. The Elder had an appointment in downtown knoxville, just a few blocks from my work. We left the appointment real close to noon and so when I was back in my office it was 12:10. I gather my workout stuff and headed up for a good swim.

I had tried to gather some clothes from home, but I couldn’t find any of my running shorts. Not that I would have time to run today, but that I would have them ready for Thursday or Friday. I check in to the Aquatic Center and put my stuff in the locker. I then proceeded to pull out my swim suit, goggles and swimcap. But what comes out instead? Running shorts. Go Figure, they were here the entire time but buried at the bottom of my workout bag. Well, I can now run the streets of Knoxville with some clothe around my loins.

It was 12:25 when I made it out the door and out to the pool. Given the short time to workout, I chose to swim 800 meters as my workout. That turned out to be a good choice. My workout was fast and furious and I even had a chance to work on my horrible flip turn. I think I turned it from horrible to really really bad, but even that is an improvement!

Time from the swim (in 137 meter intervals) were 2:43, 2:57, 3:02, 2:59, 2:58 and 3:11 for a grand total of 17:50 which I believe may be my fastest 822 meter time and 8:42 (the sum of first three intervals) is the fastest for my 411 meter time. Yeah, I know the meters aren’t even but the fact that the long length of the pool is 50 meters and the rest of the world uses meters, I am using meters. If you are metrically challenged, 822 meters is about half a mile and 411 meters is about a quarter mile.

So I am back to having my motivation back. Now to figure out what to do with it and make it useful. I didn’t get to work on my podcast like I wanted to today, but there will be time for that later. Plus, today I had an idea on what the next episode after this one should be, so maybe it won’t be so long between episodes. If I could make it every two weeks, I would be excited!

Also on a side note, the stuff that I sold on eBay, which were all cameras prompted me to open up a new camera that I had tried to sell on eBay a few weeks ago but had no bidders. It’s a Fuji Fine Pix V10 5MP compact P&S camera. I am committing to carrying this camera with me the way that I carried my now defunct (and sold) Minolta Dimage x20 which was all the time. Stella (Canon XT) is not practical to carry around with me all the time, plus I don’t have interesting things like bears to photography in my yard. All our wildlife is either an escaped dog or earthen based. Also, the compact Sanyo that I sold was an okay camera for taking pictures, but more of a chore to use and sloooooo (so slow, that the blog entry ended before it could type the letter “w”)

preparation

It is a chilly day here in Knoxville. The tempertature says 62 and it’s going to stay on the cooler, enjoyable side for a few days. I guess before Mother Nature cranks the furnace back up and starts the roasting. I can only imagine that the summer heat wave is now going to extend further into the fall.

I had resolved to swapping out my winter sweaters and long sleeved shirts out for the summer garb, but now I am not sure. I would love to have a jacket, oh wait, here’s a jacket I can wear for right now. Okay, so I am a little warming right now.

I did not workout today because I had an appointment that went from 11am until just about 1pm. But doing self-analysis, it seems that I still have no ill effects from working out. I do the soreness that I talked about earlier, but that is only when I try to stretch and find it. If I take a deliberate deep breath, I feel nothing.

I have been planning out my summer months, or rather seeing where and when I and the family will be traveling. Now, we have the classic Mid July excursion to Dallas Texas (YEE-HAW!) that will take about a week. We have a small trip to Hendersonville, Tn in June that will correspond with our Anniversary. No, it’s not for our anniversary, although we will be kidless. Which reminds me: make hotel reservations. Okay Done. We’ll also be taking a trip in August, but on a “Need to Know” basis and I don’t think that anyone “needs to know” at this point. Hey, don’t start crying… you’ll know soon enough!

September doesn’t look like we have any traveling, well, at least at this point. But I am sure that something will get stuck on the schedule.

I am thinking that for our trip to Dallas that I might want to invest in a new lens for Stella. Right now, I only have the lens that she came with and it’s fine for somethings, but I think I need a multi-functional lens that can take decent portrait (or at least close shots) with a little more Telephoto umpf (technical term, sorry). I mean really, if I am going to be capture the Raining Firemen (Check the July ’06 archives), I’m going to need something with a little more power!

Speaking of power, for Star Wars geeks like me, there are only 6 more days to vote for your favorite stamp. Sure the price of stamps have gone up, but they are going to have Star Wars stamps! Right now, Yoda is in the lead for Top Stamp with Vader as a second. The new Yoda, which is actually, the young Yoda, kicks freakin’ ass, but he wasn’t in the Original Star Wars A New Hope, So I would tend to go for someone who has, or at least someone in the Skywalker Family Tree. The website is www.uspsjedimaster.com and you can go vote for yourself.

thursday

I haven’t talked about them in a long time but I have mentioned that I participate in about 5 or 6 different free online survey groups. Most of them reward me with “points” that I can collect to buy “crap” at a later date. I’ve been doing this since 2003 and have amassed a small amount of points, enough to get something that I don’t really need. I think in a couple of more years, I will be able to claim that Nintendo DS that looks really cool for FREE! Anyway, since I have been busy with my Tuna Paper and that whole “what’s happening to my lung thing” they have been piling up and piling up. Now some of them expire after a certain time, so there is nothing that I can do with those. But I am pleased to say that I finally caught up on all of them! YAY!! Let me tell you… Shift+A, Del.

I went back to back swim days! I went back to the pool and wouldn’t you know it, the lanes were back into the short lanes. So I don’t know what the hell they were doing yesterday. And today, I was a touch more motivated to get in the pool. No dilly dallying in the locker room, counting the number of shirts and socks I have. Nope it was off with the work clothes, on with the swim suit and out to the pool. I am not sure what radio station (I think they have XM or something) but it was classic mid-90 jams. Coolio, Hootie and the Blowfish, it was like going back in time. Really, nothing says getting back into the pool than Dr. Dre ft Snoop Dogg “Nuthin’ but a G Thang”.

I really tried to see if any Rub came to be since yesterday’s wade in the pool. Apart from some localized soreness, there was no rattling that I could feel or hear. So, off I went. And to my surprise, I was able to swim 400 meters in about 8:30 which is a really good time for me seeing that I hadn’t worked out in forever, much less swim. I’ve been in shape before and swam 400 meters in 9:00-9:30 minutes, so I was rather pleased. I guess that this means I will be a little sore tonight and tomorrow.

My Lovely and Talented Wife may have scored me a (almost for pay) writing gig with a local magazine. One of the magazines that she is looking to advertise with is looking for a “columnist” to write a monthly motivational article. I say almost for pay because she is bartering my services for advertisement, but hey, if I am ever going to become a professional blogger, then I need to start somewhere, right?

So, WordPress released an update to their blogging software yesterday. Everything went great but it seems that I have lost the ability to post via email now. So, that’s a hurdle that I will have to clear. I don’t know enough (or any) programming to attempt to figure out how to fix it.

I’m am going to start planning out the content for the next Gravity@1053 podcast. If everything goes right, it’ll be recorded and released next week. And, one last thing, there are a few more Flikr pictures. I probably will upgrade to Pro, because as Michael of A Boy and His Bike mentioned, the prestige… yeah, nothing like a little prestige!
