Getting one out

I have about 15 minutes to get something out before the weekend. Dang… I might not even have a photo hunters for Saturday. Well the them is “dirty” and well… I got that one covered! Minds out the gutter please.

So yesterday was a 2-fer on the running scene… in a “Damn! Fall is great!” turn of events, my running environment went from 92F and 60% humidity to 73F and 100% humidity. It was a cool(er) and lightly raining day at lunch time for a 5 mile run on my Back to the Tracks course. I ended up with a 9:11 mile pace and had to keep telling myself to Slow Down, Slow Down!  So that was the first part.

The next part was a 6 mile run with Soon-To-Be-Dr. David. We went out on 3rd Creek Greenway for an out and back course. I was a little wound-up during the run and kept going on rants on just about everything! You named it, I was bitching about it. Anyway, we ended with a nice 9:29 pace for the run. After the run, we chatted for about 15 minutes while I got some fuel in my body. I then headed BACK out for another 4 miles on the James White Greenway.

The last 4 miles were really good. The first mile was fast at 8:58 and the next 2 miles were consistent at 9:24 each mile. The last mile was a little slower at 9:51 BUT it was up the Lake Loudon Hill and so it was actually a lot faster. So, the total for the day was 15 miles in 2:20:26 (although not consecutively) looking into the Online Crystal Ball Running Calculator that estimates a 4:16 marathon, 3 minutes faster than my previous estimation of 4:19. Now, I am putting in my actual performance times here, but in reality, I am training for a 4 hr marathon, there is a slight difference (dissertation at 11).

That’s it… I am off to enjoy the US holiday. Lots of stuff planned. Pete (my stepdad) turns old this weekend (Sept) actually, I am not sure how old he is because we don’t have that many numbers and THE super fabulous Uncle Chris takes one step closer to middle age on Monday, so give me a hand at giving these fine blokes some Birthday Wishes.

Bags GLORIOUS Bags!

The Hills are alive with Sound of Music, eh… sorry for the Showtunes there. I am trying to get High School Musical out of my head. So, let’s talk about manly manly things like “Go Bags” (read: purse) and “Man-bag” (read: purse) and “Satchel” (read: purse). Manly Man Micheal with the Motorcycle (How more manly can you get with than operating a motorcycle?) clued me in on a website that had Man Bags… not just metrosexual purses, but real tough-guy bags. And when I say tough guy bags, I mean bags that you can carry your concealed weapon on your person! Yeah… Chuck Norris type bags!

So looking though their Catalog, I came up with these selections:

Collosus

Remora

Fatboy S-Type

Jumbo S-Type

Janus (This adds more storage to the bags)

Gaining Ground

My Desks, both my physical desk and my day planner, are becoming slightly uncluttered and there is some ray of cleanliness emerging. I know that some of you now have to go decontaminate yourself because I mentioned the word “clutter”, others are looking around you saying, “Yup!”

So there are a few happenings going on and I am going to break them up in bite sized posts for you, so that you won’t have to read a book and then comment (if you so chose) on 100 ideas, 98 of them which you will forget anyway.

So, let’s go for the Little Things:

Coke Reward Points - More Bang for your Buck
A Fridge Pack (12 cans) comes with 10 reward points. So, I won’t buy 12pks unless they are $3.50 or less. I prefer to pay $3.33 or less, but sometimes I get desperate and what is ironic is that I will lay down $1.29 + tax for a cold 20oz bottle (3 pts) and not even think about it… I need to drink water ($1.49 + tax for a liter). Anyway, for a Fridge pack, that’s about 35 cents a point. Okay. Well, our Food City has a special where you can get a 24 pack for $4.99! So that’s Too-Fiddy for a 12pk and you get 50 MyCokeReward points! Yow-sah! That’s a no brainer… that’s only 10 cents a point AND a deal on juice. Score!

Something in the Weather
My sore throat is gone… I have a little congestion, but that might be  from the weather  moving toward fall… and  living in East Tennessee… there is only 1 thing and 1 thing only that could be the cause. Football. That’s right it’s Football Time in Tennessee. Saturday the Big Orange Warriors aka University of Tennessee Volunteers will begin it’s football campaign in… California. Yup, the Vols are going back to Cali, cali, cali to take on the Golden Bears of UC Berkeley. That’s right, the same Tree Huggin’ Technological Brain Farm of “Berkeley” does have a football program and a good one I might add.

Now, if you are interested in Football, the American style football where the ball looks like it was pooped (same color and everything) from an Elephant not “The Beautiful Game” and specifically, University of Tennessee Football then you have to check out Fulmer’s Belly. It’s a fabulous great website that is obsessed dedicated to Volunteer Football. It’s a risky business to talk about Football in East Tennessee, Football is second only to Jesus and Church Services in popularity in these thar parts and some times I wonder if it’s not First. I do know that Peyton Manning is the official Saint of East Tennessee.

The website talks about UT Football and makes stuff up covers other features and teams of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) (which should not to be confused with the Financial SEC). The writing is very witty and informative and I love the way they use the strikethrough to enhance enhance the humor factor.

The Suit

No, that handsome fellow is not me, I was going for that there was so much “red tape” with a Government contract that you could make a dress out of it (or other fashionable clothes). The dude in the picture is actually a Duct Tape Guru and has workshops on how to make Duct Tape clothing and other accessories (such as wallets).

I did find another site that had red duct tape clothing, HERE is the link. [ed. Thanks Leesa for the heads up on the link!] Now, it’s a woman’s top (I could tell from the larger protrusions in the chest area… I’m smurt) but the dude is wearing in it to give himself some man-boobs. Anyway, the cool thing was that the post below it had running bibs!

On a side note: If my daughter went to the prom in a red duct tape dress, I would approve it. Just think how hard it would be to get out of it. Hmmmm… but if you are a determined horny master of duct tape, you will find a way…

Hanging out Off the Face of the Earth

You might think that I have been camping out Off the Face of the Earth, but really I haven’t. I have been busy enough with home and work that my blog reading and writing has gone into a hibernation state. But thank goodness that nothing last forever… okay Uranium has a really long half life and diamonds not only are really pretty can take a beating.

So this is a Mid-Week Update and hopefully the start of something beautiful or at least some writing that has some substance to it.

So Monday I didn’t run because of a sharp pain in my throat, a sore throat to be exact and I was in fear that I would be Down and Out with a cold. However, a sore throat was my only symptom. Weird. But when lunchtime rolled around, I wasn’t going to risk worsening my condition, so I sat at my desk and sobbed that I couldn’t run tried to organize from the weekend.

Tuesday I actually got back out on the road and tried a new course that I call Squiggy Fort. See you run in Fort Sanders and the path makes it look like you are squiggling on the map. I’ll map the course and you can see for yourself. But it was a 3.25 mile course that I’ll want to expand to 4 miles if I can. It has a good number of short and steep hills that will be good for the ever popular Hill Workouts. Some Tuesdays My Lovely and Talented Wife has events or meetings or other things that occupy her and Cris has the kids, so this is a Bonus Day for me to do stuff (read: Run Errands). Now, it’s also the Finance Day were I sit down and Roll Dice, Play the Stock Market, Do Off Shore Betting, Online Casinoing, Pay Bills, Create a Budget, Send Money to Gurtha Noombada from Africa (that’s such a sad story), etc. Okay, I really only do a few of these things.

So nothing says “I have a chance to run” than going to Concord Park and running some trails. Concord Park is close to my house, it’s so loopy that I can basically run any distance and still be close to the car and it’s shaded. It Also provides good practice for the 17.5 mile Trail run in Big South Fork that I am running in September. So, I managed to bang out a 3.28 mile trail run at an 9:30 average pace. This is great because I am reaping the effects of my speed work outs in July and August, along with my 5k last week. Now, I do have to get some endurance runs in now so that I can last the 17.5 miles, but I think that is manageable.

I did take Wednesday (the day I am writing this) off and hung out at the pool since I was a little fatigued from Tuesday’s Run. I am running with Soon To Be Doctor David tomorrow and want to be rested with running with the young whipper snapper.

Dang, I ran out of time again… this work stuff is for the birds. We have a multi-million dollar contract on the line (basically everyone’s job) and so I have been running around using my Super Computer Ninja Skills to get it ready. It’s pretty much done… well, it’s in the hands of Kinko’s right now, waiting for the insane number of copies. [queue Keystone Cop Theme Music] It’s not a Government Proposal unless there are multiple hoops, redundant tasks and enough tape to do something like this

Weekend Update

This post has to be fast and furious (albeit no Vin Diesel)…

Saturday… we went to the Dragon Boat Races here in Knoxville. It was, uh, interesting. Perhaps if we were part of one of the teams, we would have been more inclined to watch the boats with dragon racing in the Tennessee River. While the races were taking place… I was taking 75+ pictures of my kids running underneath the waterfall at Volunteer Landing. Pictures to be loaded in a future post and on Flikr… stay tuned. All I have to say is that Stella needs 1) A Lens Hood and 2) A better lens.

Sunday… fairly quiet day at the house. The Elder road a bike (with training wheels) for the first time. Our church had a Children’s Sale and we scored a $5 bike. I won’t be applying for Photographer of the Year Award since I didn’t have my camera with me during this event. I’ll wait until we take the training wheels off and there is real imminent danger.

WARNING: BAG TALK AHEAD
If you like bags, then this is for you… all other proceed to Sore Throat text.
Bags. Thanks to the Super Bike Stud (yes, he is available for dates) Michael who left me with a website with Real Men Bags,

whoops… ran out of time… stay tuned for another post later.

Photo Hunters: Happy

This Week’s Theme: Happy

Instead of putting something that makes me happy, I thought I would put someone being happy. Well, I take that back… this is The Younger at his 2 year old birthday party and well, he makes me happy! He is enjoying a strawberry cake with some cream cheese ice cream, a special treat for his birthday. Was is funny about this picture is that he is totally hamming it up right now. That’s right, this is a total pose for the camera to get a few laughs out of his parents!

The Catchup (Not Ketchup)

It’s been an interesting week. The only consistent thing has been the heat. During the say, we are having upper 90s with a Feels Like temperature of over 100 degrees. No rain in the forecast despite being 12+ inches below our normal average (which has been pretty much the same story all summer). There are talks about the Water Police setting down regulations on water usage. *sigh*

Alright, so let’s beat the heat and get into some of the more interesting stuff:

WHO WON?
I had 2 entrants for my “Guess My Time” contest: Marathon Chris from the Blog and Podcast: Running Adventures and Petra from the Blog: Petra’s Still Running. Let’s see how these beautiful women did and see if they are the new owners of some delicious Odwalla Bars. They had to predict 4 different items for my Scholar’s Run last weekend. The 1st item was Overall Time, MarathonChris: 23:51 and Petra: 23:12 and my official time was 23:32. Wouldn’t you know it… splits it right down the middle!! That is just FREAKY!

2nd item was Overall Place. This one was a little trickier as the race had a 10 year high of 303 finishers! I was finisher #87 and that put me in the top 30% of finishers, so MarathonChris: 74 and Petra:73 would have been closer had there not been so many faster runners, which also affected item #3.

3rd item was Age Group Place. I was even surprised at my “No better than” 11th in my age group! Apparently the increase of finishers were faster runners in my Age Group! MarathonChris and Petra:4th and even I thought that I would be no worse than 6th, but 11th! Yikes!

4th item was Bib Number. This was just a stab in the dark. Not all races start with 1, some start with 1000 and if you do start with #1, the number of preregistered runners is a total guess as well. My bib number was 214 and here is how the girls guessed, MarathonChris: 183 and Petra: 189.

So, although I wouldn’t suggest they go pick out lottery numbers, I do consider them really good guess and thus each deserving of 2 Odwalla Bars! All you lovely ladies need to do to claim your delicious and nutritious prize is to email me your postal address and I will get them on their way!

RUNNING
I only ran twice this week (Tuesday and Friday) both runs turned out to be Tempo runs which I guess served their purpose. Tuesday run was supposed to be easy, but turned into Tempo within 1/2 mile, then the last 3/4 of a mile of the run, it was just survival! The heat was so crazy, I had to get back to the Aquatic Center ASAP. Now that UT is back in school, there are more pedestrians around and that lends to faster paces and more obstacles. Friday’s run was a fairly fast 4 mile run on the Fab 4 Miler course. Running Tempo paces in the heat, really takes a lot out of you. I am hoping that the weather will break soon.

I did have a script for the next Gravity episode, but it’s off having a party somewhere. I can’t find it, so apart from everything else, I need to rewrite that script. *sigh*

SEASON CYCLE MOVING ROUND AND ROUND
Uh, it’s 100 degrees outside but you can’t stop nature’s cycle. I noticed on Tuesday that there were a lot more leaves around. Then, one of the trees in my neighborhood is  about 3/4 of the way bare. Fall is coming and there’s nothing you can do about it!

REARM and REGROUP
Although my week was thrown a couple of monkey wrenches and my schedule was topsy turvy, I am going to get back on track with everything that I need to do and want to do. I mean, what’s a boy to do? It’s not like I can go out and buy shoes but there is always bags… Mmmmm bags.

Down but not out

Surprisingly enough, I am still alive and kicking… due to some circumstances… I have not been able to attend to my blog. I will have a blog entry later today catching up with what has been in my Universe this week.

Stay Tuned!

2007 Scholar’s Run

This past weekend was the 2007 Scholar’s Run, hosted by Parks & Rec in association with the Foothill Striders and is the Second Leg of the Ruby Tuesday Triple Crown of Running. I’ll let you click the link for all the details.

This race was my first race in the transition period between Summer Running and Fall Marathon Training Schedule. It’s also the only race that I have ran each year, without fail, since I started running in 1998. Being that it’s late August and the race is held in hilly Maryville, TN, so it’s not one of those PR type courses.

As I pulled into the Maryville College campus it was hard to miss the HUGE pile of building debris off to my right and I thought to myself, “That’s part of the course.” Well, yes and no. It was part of the course, but not this year. The building was being demolished and they blocked off the small section of road next to the building that was a hill that I referred to as the “Demoralizer.” It sat at about the 2.5 mile mark (out of 3.1 miles) and was about 0.1 mile in length and just a Quad (leg muscle) buster. Everything about it was demoralizing. It was near the end of the course, you had to do a 90 degree turn to start it, it was steep, there was more hill after you got to the top and did I mention it was steep?

I parked and made my way to packet pick up. Typically, this race has a great goody bag for pre registered runners and it didn’t disappoint this year. Inside was a Ruby Tuesday branded small FM radio. The first thing I thought of was why a race gave out an item with headphones, and no, we weren’t allowed to use them during the race.

My legs were a little tired from the Tempo run the day before. I had ran a little too fast and out of everything involved with the race, I worried that my legs would be dead at the end to endure the hills. I did run a 10 minute warm up run, just to get the pre race jitters out which helped but not much.

The construction on campus changed the route a little. To accommodate the change, the middle of the course was reversed and that made the harder hills more in the middle of the course instead of later in the course. However, we still had the last hill at the end of the race. The problem isn’t the steepness of that hill, it’s the fact that it is long and curvy, so you never get a good chance to focus on the hill before you have to adjust for the turns.

I stood in the middle of the pack of runners, going over my starting line strategy. I seemed to be further back than normal, but not by much. I would be forced to pace with the traffic in front of me and given that a 5k is only 3.1 miles, you don’t have a lot of time to make up a slow start and weaving in and out of runners at the start will kill your time. The starting gun fired and it took me about 4 or 5 seconds to make it to the white tape on the ground.

It wasn’t 10 seconds into the race before a runner tripped beside me. I was fine, but still adds a element of surprise and nervousness, that makes you start your in-race analysis of the conditions around you. In short races, you must always be aware of what’s going on and what you are doing, you just can’t afford not to.

The first loop was on the campus and passes in front of the Maryville College Gym (also the finish line) but it shares the same section of campus that is part of the final approach of the race. Yes, this means that you have to go up the curvy hill twice. As I was monitoring how I was feeling, I thought to myself that I must only be running around an 8 minute mile. I was pacing behind two runners that seemed to be running consistently and it was tough (but not difficult) to maintain their speed. But I didn’t feel fast at all.

As we started the up hill turn, I continued at my pace while the others slowed down to acclimate to the hill. I have no fear of hills and see them as a opportunity to pass runners and rest some part of my legs as my quads become the powerhouse for the race. I still felt pretty good at the top of the hill, well, as good as you can get while running.

We approached the first mile split and I was surprised, very surprised at my time. The volunteer calling out split times had to be misspeaking because instead of the “eight” that I was expecting to hear based on my perceived speed and level of exertion, they called out “seven” instead. I hit the first mile at 7:39.

Once we left the campus, the was some reprieve as we proceeded down hill and then for a level stretch. The bad thing is that what goes down, must come up. At this point, I wasn’t pacing with anyone, I was just in my groove trying not to slow down and just trying to survive the hills.

The nice thing about 5ks is that when you hit Mile 2, you know that the race is about done… it’s just 1.1 miles to go. So, at a turn before yet another incline, the Mile 2 split time was called and I had cut 2 seconds off for a 7:37 split. At least, at the top of this little hill, I would not have to endure any more inclines until the last final approach.

Turning back into campus with around 3/4 mile to go, I started to do my Finish Line Assessment. Here is when I figure how much juice I have left, how much I am hurting, and strategy for the last 1/4 mile. First thing was that I couldn’t go any faster, I could not pick up the pace, so if someone was going to pass me, I would have to let them pass. I would just have to deal with it. With the hill at the end, I could not afford the energy drain. Next, I look ahead at the runners ahead of me and like a hungry lion, I looked for the sick and weak of the herd in front of me.

Near the start of the last hill, I heard it. A runner, actually two, passing me at the start of the hill. Being true to my strategy, I stayed the course and let them go… oh did I want to ghost behind them and then pass them in the last 50 feet! But no… I did not. My reward? I passed two runners myself at the base of the hill.

Tucked in and focusing at the turns on the hill, I was able to make it past another runner. Consistency is the name of the game on a hill… and you don’t stop until you pass the top. With a little more than 0.1 of a mile to go, the hill final crested and I was making preparations for the final approach.

A group of runners was in front of me, and in reach. I would not be able to turn on my turbo boosters and blow past everyone in the last 0.1 of a mile, but I did pick up some speed. It was nice that they marked the 3 mile mark, and that only confirmed an even pace with a 7:32 mile. With 0.1 of mile to go, I had passed 6 runners already and there were 5 more ahead of me. Now there were only 3 ahead and I wasn’t going to catch them.

Well, I wasn’t going to catch them, until the kid running about 20 feet of me, stopped cold in his tracks, bent over and begin throwing up. Had I been centered behind him, I would have either had to hurdle him or plow through him. He had no chance of making to the side before his body rebelled against the physical exertion and began expelling morning’s offerings.

In the final 100 feet, I ran as hard as I could, and tucked behind a runner that I couldn’t beat to the finish line unless I pushed him out of the way. Too bad he was in my age group. I finished, unofficially in 23:26 (my watch). As I was trying to catch my breath in the finishing chute, I saw a guy with rubber gloves on and tried to tell him that a kid was puking on the course. Thankfully, someone helping the boy was calling for the medical team and he headed over to check the boy.

I found the gatorade and water then started my cool down run. Back behind the gynasium is the Maryville Woods and has a nice set of trails behind it. So I cooled down in the shade of the trees but not for too long, there were awards and doorprizes to win.

I didn’t win either. The closest I got was a door prize because they called 213 and my bib was 214. Oh well… maybe next time. And the age group awards. Eh, the 3rd place finisher in the 35-39 age group had a time of 20:54.

Now that the results are posted, my official time was 23:32, I was 87th out of 303 finishers. They didn’t post ages this time, which isn’t very helpful, but at best I placed 11th in my age group but there were 9 people in the result I that I could not find ages in other race results (so I don’t know). Looks like my age group was stacked this race. Even my 5k PR time of 21:56 would have only gotten me to 6th! So, I don’t mind the 11th place, I did finish in the top 30% of all finishers.

Winners of my Guess My Time Contest will be announced shortly.

After I was done and getting ready to leave, I saw the kid sitting up right and in his van with his family around him. He had a bag of ice around his neck and look like an EMT was helping him.
