Kicking is what I did in the pool today while swimming. Typically, in my freestyle swimming stroke I only kick right after I have taken a breath and for only 2 or 3 kicks. The problem that I run into, is that I have big muscular legs (soccer player legs) which is fine to do gross motor skills like running slowly or power lifting (but I don't have the upper body strength to really be good at it). What they are not good for is small muscular activities such as kicking while swimming, sprinting and being flexible. The “skinny” on them is that the smaller muscles are less developed than the bigger muscles (quads, hamstrings, etc) and therefore are not up to the tasks when I call for them for prolonged kicking during swimming or when I want to touch my toes. So, I only kick when my swimming gait makes it convenient to kick. Generally, continuous kicking results in a cramp in my leg or some other symptom that causes me to stop immediately as not to jeopardize my running.

But today, I did a whole 3 laps of continuous kicking and no repercussions on said exercise. In fact, my 3 lap time was greatly reduced despite being the 3 laps in the middle of my workout when I tend to lose focus on my workout from lactic acid build up and a wandering mind. I ended up doing 1005 meters of total swimming for the entire work out but essentially two different sessions. The first session was the 800 meter (1/2 mile) of free style and the second session was trying to swim 25 yards (one length) underwater which I was unsuccessful to do. I realized today that I am actually panic struck in the pool when I am not in control. I think that is why the Lake swims in triathlons scare the a bajezzus out of me… who knows what creepy crawlies are swimming next to you. Never mind what chemicals are in the water. (we don't eat the fish here). So I get little more than halfway underwater, my body says “WTF?!” and I immediately surface in a controlled panic. I haven't called any of the lifeguards over in a frenzied panic, but it's safe to know that someone is watching.
