Grandma

It has been a few days since I last blogged. Easter has gone by and Grandma has been laid to rest. Here is the snippet from the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette:
Margaret Varney
RANTOUL – Margaret Bernice Varney, 77, of Rantoul died Friday (March 25, 2005) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Park Christian Church, Rantoul. The Rev. Steven Jumper will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Rantoul.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove St., Rantoul

I am planning on Dedicating my run at the Expo 10k on May 28 to her. I believe that she would have been 78 on June 16th.

I'll be out of town the next few days and will have very limited blogging capablities… see you then.

Grandma Varney

I found out today that my Grandma Varney passed away this morning from complications of Bronchitis and Pneumonia. As much as I miss her, I know that her suffering here is over and she is happy, so that makes handling it easier. She is the immediate family member closest to me that has passed away on me and so it's strange.

I love you Grandma… Rock On!

Lightbeams from Heaven

As I was making my way home last night on I-40, I caught a glimse of sunlight breaking through a hole in the clouds, just like you would see in a movie. I took the photograph, with my damaged Minolta Dimage X20, while driving none the less and through the windshield. I managed to get 3 shots of it and this one was the best of them all. The view, of course, was much more awe inspiring in person.

It's a fine day for SCIENCE!

I came across this website via another blog and had to go check it out. It is a cool contraption for someone who, er, your local pyromanic under the guise of Helio Engineer. The guy with too much time on their hands built his own “Laser” he can use it to take over the world just like a super villain. Muhahahaha! Click on the picture to see the Solar Death Ray's amazing power.

Last night was my first time that I ran since Feb 24th, almost a whole month because of the pneumonia. My short session on the treadmill was:
1 mile walk at 20min pace
0.25 mile at 12 min pace
0.50 mile at 10min pace
0.25 mile at 12min pace
1 mile walk at 20min pace

I wouldn't say that it was difficult, but being on R&R for that long the body has to be reminded… “oh yeah, we run.” I feel fine today, I think the pollen in the trees are giving me a little run in my nostrils, but nothing bad.

My appointment for the final chest Xray is on April 5th, so I don't want to go 100% until the doctor clears me. I'll probably not go any faster than a 10min pace and probably not run more than 4 miles in any one session. I'm going to run again on Thursday!

We had a little care with Jen today which required a trip to the doctor's office. Everything is A-Okay and we even got to see Baby Incognito again and more pictures! Incognito was asleep or at least sleepy because he/she was yawning (or maybe swallowing). So our next (scheduled) trip to the Doctor's is April 6th.

UT is on Spring Break right now, so I haven't had to tutor this week… nice break.

Detailed Marathon Report

sunday was the inaugural Knoxville Marathon and I had initially signed up to be a runner, but two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with pneumonia and was unable to run the race for fear of a relapse. So, to be a part of the race, I decided that I would volunteer on Sunday during the race. This way, I can say that I have been a part of all the Knoxville Marathons (in years to come) but I will not be able to say that I “finished” them all. I will take what I can get!

On Wednesday, I received my assignment to be a course monitor at the intersection of Forest avenue and 10th Street. This spot was about at the 11.5 mile marker, a very flat 0.1 of a mile and right after a turn off a hill. I was able to have a great shot of the runners as they made their way in my direction. My main responsibility was for the safety of the runners, mostly from vehicles. Other responsibilities were to cheer on the runners and look for runners that may need any help and contact the lead so that medical personnel could arrive (luckily, I didn't need any of that).

I checked in right around 7:00am which was race start, they wanted us at our post 20 minutes before the first runners showed up. So for me, this was about 8:00am and so I needed to be there at 7:30. It was a short walk from volunteer check-in to my post. The day before, I had made little bags of pretzels and had bought the kids sized water bottles and Snack sized M&Ms for the runners. I also had prearranged with Marty that I would have a gel packet for him there but didn't tell him that I made him a bag of the secret weapon… shortbread cookie with the chocolate stripen. This reference dates back to my Mardi Gras Marathon in 2002 when I was very hungry around mile 14 and somebody had shortbread cookies with chocolate on them. They seemed to work wonders and Marty has “made fun” since I told him the story. Well, I thought that this would be the perfect time to “turn the tables” on him and give him the “shortbread cookie with the chocolate stripen” (said in a German accent).

The first half-marathoner came through around 7:56 or so. The leader Charles Kiwibot, who was the ultimate winner came through at 7:58, all by himself. He was easily a good 30-45sec ahead of the next runner at this point. At this point, more runners started to round the corner. I had made a sheet with runner's bib numbers and their name from the people that I met on the Knoxville Marathon Discussion Forum. Since I didn't know what they looked like, I could only tell them by their number. That lasted for about 10 minutes until the first of several motorists came to my intersection. The Fort Sander's area is home to Children's Hospital, Fort Sanders Medical Center and NHC nursing home. The course went along the perimeter of Fort Sanders to allow movement in and around the hospital. Unfortunately, there was an emergency during the race and so my street was a point of access toward the hospitals. Only one person made any type of fuss, although you could tell that some of the other people were very stressed that they had to wait for a break in the runners to go across the street.

I was able to see Ray G, John F, Marty V, Solange V, Tom H, Annette H and their friend Andre'a. One of the other forumites, Mary, had asked me to keep on the look out for her friend Pat, and if I did see to yell “Go Pat from Michigan!”. I did see her and yelled out to her. Mary told me later that Pat was very surprised to hear her name during the race.

At 10:00am my section of the course closed, which meant that if any runners were still on the course, they had to fend for themselves. At this point I had to go to the bathroom, so I actually jogged a little to Panera where I could relieve myself in comfort. I saw a lot of the 5k people in there and a few of the half marathoners as well. The batteries in my camera had died earlier (the reason fewer pictures), so I need to get some new ones. I went to the BP station across the street and was ready to pay the steep $4.29 for 4 AA batteries, but he only charged me $4 total…sweet. I busted my but over to the stadium since it was 10:15… 3 hours and 15 minutes into the course and the first people I knew should be finishing in 3:35. I jogged a little more through campus and up the hill, I was a little winded but felt fine.

I made it to the intersection just before the stadium, right about at the 26.1 point. I had my runner's sheet out since I had a good view of the runners as they made their way down the final stretch. I cheered on the runners as they went by. I found out that it was very fun to cheer people who had their name or nickname on the FRONT of their shirt… you could really yell out “GO BOB GO”! I caught alot of the Forum people off guard as I saw their number and yelled out their name. It was very satisfying. I got to see everyone except for Solange (she ran the half in 2:18). As I was cheering the runners on, I had heard a number of people forgetting to look at the Jumbotron! Yikes. Probably the funniest event while cheering runners was one lady who responded “I love youuuuu” in response to me cheering her on as she past. When Tom, Annette and Andre'a went to the finish, I went into the stadium to see what the finish line looked like.

I found Tom and Annette as they were leaving the field, and was able to chat with them for a bit. All the finishers received a “Finisher” Shirt as well as the medal. The medal was very nice. I was a square medal with the Knoxville logo, in color, with 2005 in Orange (they had to get orange in there somewhere, after all it IS Tennessee) and a dual colored ribbon of blue and green.

I was very excited and satisfied with my involvement with the Marathon. It makes me want to volunteer for more races here, I think it would be a very fun thing to do. I should get a kid carrier so that I can take Eric with me to these races and even Jen could go if Eric is in the Bird's Nest watching the runners. But I need a Kid Carrier first!

I was able to have my 2005 entry deferred to next year, so I am ready to run next year. I think though I will volunteer the day before the race… I think that would make it very rewarding, but NOTHING beats being a course monitor.

Expedited Marathon Report

Here is an excerpt from the Knoxville Marathon Discussion Forum

Great job runners! I sure wish that I was able to run with you all, but you know what… I had SO much FUN being a course monitor! Despite the fact that my intersection was rather busy with some understanding and not so understanding people, it was very enjoyable.

I saw Charles Kiwibot at 7:58am and he was EASILY ahead of the next marathon runner.

I only saw a handful of forum people at my post, but I was able to go to the stadium where I saw a bunch of the marathon people.

Some of the people I missed on the course
Ruth (rvalle) and her friends
Mary Lake (Mary) although I did see Pat and Yelled “Go Pat from Michigan”
John (JohnK)
Jarrell (smelvis)

People I saw
John (barrowjh)
Lisa (lilbrogers) - I recognized that purple hat before I saw your race number!
Arvel (Arvel Debty)
John (jhfenton) - when I saw you at 11 you looked strong at 26 you looked motivated and glad to be over. Congratulations on your HUGE PR (although you did miss the 5k awards )
Ray (Ray Green) -when I didn’t see Ray at 3:35 or at 4 hrs I thought either he TORE UP the course or something was wrong. Wish it hadn’t been the latter.
GaRebelRunner - I think it took you a second to realize what was going on when i yelled out your Forum name…
Bill (Valboski76)
Alan (docpepper) - You were right inside the upper limit of your prediction interval 4:30-5:00 and glad that you had enough information to reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative that the person cheering was indeed me.
Nickolay (NVL)
Jim (Goat Dog) - Who at that intersection before the stadium, had his own cheering group! Great Job…
James (Knox Runner)
Andrew from DE (andrew) - I saw you early at mile 11, but by the time was able to look up your number, you had gone… I must have written down your time wrong because you were much earlier than I expected.
Annette (nuclearchik) - Along with hubby Tom and friend Andre’a. Funny comment Annette made about possibly running Nashville… “after [the hills] in Knoxville, Nashville will be a breeze”
Marty (Marty Velas) - and his lovely and talented wife Solange

Great Job Runners!

and from an email to a fellow KTCer:
I had an absolute blast. Apart from being able to running the marathon,
this was definitely satisfying being a part of the entire event. My
intersection at Forest and 20th was actually quite busy. Some of the
motorists were only looking for runner/walkers, but others were not. It
seemed that there an emergency and workers who were called in could not
get to where they needed to park. Huge Kudos to the Velo riders who
helped me out a great deal when I had cars in both directions! Also,
some people where trying to get to the NHC place (I have no idea where
is located). Glad to hear that it was a success, to the runners that I
have spoken with directly, they had a great time and I look forward to
hearing other race report

2005 Inaugral Knoxville Marathon

Training Motto:

Don’t Get Pneumonia… Uh-OH

Marathon Excitement

I am not even running the marathon and I am getting excited about it. I guess this time, I get to see ALL the runners, well, not the 5k runners. Regardless, I'll get to see all of them and be able to see the front runners battling it out at around a 5:00 mile per min pace. WOW! this will be cool. I won't be able to see the winner finish, as I work until about 10:30-10:45 but I should be able to make it back to the stadium to see most of my friends finish.

Sniffles

I figured that I should update my blog sometime this week. After all it is Thursday. And to boot, it is St Patty's Day and even though I won't be drinking green beer, I am going to drink a beer from a Green Can! So it all works out.

Tuesday I went walking around the track on Tuesday. Marty met me there and we walked around the track talking about his preparations for the marathon this Sunday. I tried to give him a few pointer mainly because he will be on his own this marathon. I originally was going to run with him and pace him for as long as I could so that he could get a 4:15 time. He thinks that he'll come in around 4:30-4:45 but I think that he is closer to a 4:15 and it wouldn't surprise me much if he is closer to 4:00. We will see on Sunday.

I know what my job is going to be for Sunday. I am going to be a course monitor at the intersection of Forest Ave and 20th. It is around the 11.4-11.5 mile mark during the race. I am excited because now I will be able to see the Full and the Half runners. Here is a picture of where I will be on the course

Jen and I made a list of the words that Eric knows. We came up with 30 words that he can say, not all the words are clear, such as “SpongeBob” sounds like “BunBob” but it is a specific word for a specific item.

Jen will be in Charlotte North Carolina for Mary Kay Career Conference Friday and Saturday. It's going to Boy's Days Out. I don't have anything concrete in plans, but I figure we will run some errands around town, plus go to the Marathon Expo on Saturday.

I found a discrepancy in our website with the way the pictures albums are stored. I am now having to reload most of the picture albums. For some reason, Dreamweaver does not want to auto change all the links, so I am having to do them myself. Luckily, DW can tell me which links are broken and if there are similar pages then it will fix them all at once. This helps cut down on time, but even with that I am only to Oct 2003 right now. This might take a few days.
